porting stock heads?

My plans have changed once again. Im going with a DSS 331. Since this is gonna take up most of my funds, I wont have the money for heads, yet. While I'm waiting, I was thinking of porting the stock heads. How much can I port them? Should I just wait until I get the money for the heads? I'm still deciding on the cam. So you know my goal is 400 rwhp, NA. Thanx all.

dont invest money into your stock heads. use that $400 you would on porting to get a good set of heads. you could go with alot of things.... edelbrock, TFS, FMS, etc etc. look for some used in the stangnet classifieds to save you some money. i know the 331 is a great motor, but why not the 306 bullet long block. they have them for like 3600.,....which is probably only about 1000 more than the 331 shortblock.

The stock heads even well ported are going to stave your top end power. I guess that's all you have and you just want to get your car running, you could take a dremel or die grinder and clean up the exaust.

I disagree to all of the above statements. I have ported stock heads on my 351w and it screams with a 570/580 lift cam (E7's flow very close to 351w heads). Good enough also for a 12.1 e/t. I say if you're careful about it and know what your doing, port those heads!!!

You will be down a set of gaskets and a week of eating dust... PORT the heads!! There are 11s on a 347 and ported heads, 12s in the fox on ported heads, low 13s will be a cake walk on ported heads ( and driving tech) IF it is the HP NUMBER your after and still want to drive the car... port the heads!! bolt them on and have fun while your saving for the "good heads". OR......... wait!!

i think that was a sales pitch ;)

Nope... just a "ported heads are KILLER" pitch!! Dont be afraid of porting a set of heads and trying it!! It is always better to try something than not to ! cool?? And If that is a sales pitch.... oops!! I look at it as a learning experiance and the needs for aftermarket arent always the answer for fun and driving, and Learning...!!
