Posessed air conditioning.

Ok, so I forked out 750 bucks to have a new compressor, drier/accumulator...etc thrown into the car for my Air Conditioning to work. I was very happy the morning i picked it up to find cold air blowing out of my vents.

Heres the problem: Lately when I turn on my AC, no matter what setting I have it on (vent, floor.. etc) it blows out of the windshield defrost vents. Sure its cold air but for the love of god I live in Texas! I need it to blow directly in my face for it to stop the sweating!

I haven't reported this problem back to the shop that put my compressor in because i'm pretty sure its just an unrelated coincidence that whatever it is that controls airflow has failed. Correct me if i'm wrong but when you install the aforementioned AC components you don't touch what it is that deals with the airflow; right?

Anyways, can someone shed some light on how the airflow is directed in a single zone AC system like ours?

The vac feed for the HVAC is probably open. The default with no vacuum (like at WOT when you have no manifold vac) is out the windshield vents.

Trace the line under the hood and you should find the open. It's a very common issue. It's a 30 second fix once you find it.

Mine did the same thing...turns out it was a broken vacuum line that was under the hood. (runs parralel to the firewall, black in color)

Yup, it's most likely the very thin plastic line that runs under the cowl along the firewall from the drivers side corner. There is a vacuum tree there. Once my broke in the middle. The second time it broke a piece off in the tree itself. I ended up getting new tubing at Oreillys and replacing most of it as mine was really brittle.

I popped the hood and found that line pretty severed and someone had duct taped it. After putting a tiny bit of force on the duct tape it just popped right open so I'm assuming this is the hvac vac line you all are reffering to.

So, heres my follow up questions:

1. How does that line tell my AC unit what vent to blow out of?

2. I can't see where it runs off to because it disapears into a hole. Is it easy to replace the entire line even though it runs away into that crevice?

3. Is it fairly cheap and would oreily's have it?

That does look like a winner.

If you have a piece of rubber vac line that has an ID that fits over the OD of your OEM line, you can splice it. The rubber splice would function like the duct tape did (albeit much better). I've done this and it works decently as a temp fix.

The ducting for the vents is controlled with vacuum. Have you ever gone to WOT for a bit and noticed your vents stop blowing on your face? Once the vac reservoir is depleted, the HVAC controls lose vac (as happened to you with your open vac line). The result is the default setting (air out the windshield vents).

I havent replaced the entire line so I'll let the guys take care of that question.

Ah i see... Ok, well I went to O'reilly Auto and grabbed a foot of the right size tube for about 40 cents. Besides burning myself a few times (couldn't wait till the car was cool, lol) trying to splice the two broken ends together the mission was a success.
