Possible Clutch issue (whine)? Svttech Chime in please if possible...

Ever since i had the car i have had a small problem, 1 out of every 6 or 7 takeoffs from a light or a stop sign (normal driving) as im releasing the clutch ill hear a slight whine and the car doesnt take off normally kinda stutters, but not engine stutter more like tranny stutter (the whine lasts about 2 seconds then goes away and onto normal driving)

The problem is more noticible going uphill from a stop, and more noticible in the cold.

I think it may be the clutch or some bearing because it does this in 1st, 2nd, or Reverse...

Its not the rear end, because i hear it right below my feet, maybe a driveshaft issue?

SVT has had transmission whine for 20k miles with no problems....that's what I was told.

I guess the T45's are like that.

Mine is nothing like that. my trans is quiet in first gear, whines always in second and is fine in all the other gears. I have gear and snycro damage in mine and I will drive it untill it blows up then I will rebuild.


Ok does this whine happen before the car moves? does it increase with engine rpm's

it's most likely the clutch try to test and see if it's sliping by climbing a hill in 4th gear at low rpm's ( under 1400) or so.

I did the clutch test and it is NOT slipping 4th gear and the hill...

It whines just as the clutch engages and makes the car take off slower like its grinding against something for about 2 seconds then it goes away and onto normal driving.

My 98 GT is doing the exact same thing. My car also (only sometimes) has the throw out bearing chirp at idle. My car occasionally does the slipping thing in reverse, but always in first. It does not do it in any other gear ..

you feel this slows the car down when it happens. I have heard a few TOB's make a whine sound when partialy engaged.

If you leave the light at a higer rpm and slip the clutch a little more does it still whine or chug like that?

Yes it does still whines and chugs when i leave at higher RPMs... Totally consistant.

I think I would have to see the car in person for me to diag this one. does anybody in eastern,ma have this problem?

Id take it to my mechanic to fix it but its not really a problem more of a concern or an annoyance. I really dont know how else to describe it to you i guess try and think of it like this...

You partly engage the cluch and for about two seconds it sounds like your DS grinds against something obviously slowing down the car in just about any gear.

well most likely it's the ch but I don't want to see you go out and buy a clutch on a guess.

How difficult is it to pull the tranny? I have my car up on jackstands because I just changed my rack bushings (won't know how they work until I get an intake manifold) but I was thinking about pulling the trans. I am almost 100% sure my throwout bearing is bad and figured that since my car is already 'apart' I would do it. I have never done it on a Mustang before (only my brothers 240sx). I know the basics but was wondering if there are any time saving tips, how long it takes roughly, etc. Thx in advance and if I pull it I will be sure to post what the insides look like, as it may help others ...

It's pretty easy. the hardest parts are removing the top starter bolt and realiging the trans after your done.

first thing to do is put the shifter in neutral and remove it. then get a rag with a rubber band to cover the shifter tunnel. then remove you mid pipe and driveshaft. after that remove the starter and the 4 bolts holding the crossmember in the back.

Remove all the bellhousing bolts. ( you will need a swivel 13mm and a long 3/8 extension for the top ones) and with all the electric connectors pulled remove the trans.

while you have the trans down replace the pivot ball and inspect the clutch fork. personally I recomend replacement of the TOB, clutch fork and pivot ball

My throw out bearing rattles all the time. It more of annoyance than anything. When I get tired of it I will upgrade all of the clutch parts. Pearl02.
