So I took my 91 vert across the truck scales @ work. WIth me in it (200lbs) the damn thing weighed 3740 lbs. My questions is, with 3.55:1 gears, how much horsepower to make this thing fast? Or at least feel fast and not like a turd. Stock motor, Art Carr auto and MM suspension. I am think I want 10 lbs/hp or less. What does everyone else think? Thanks.

I agree. That would be 374HP...at the crank, yeah the car would move good. At the wheels...the car would fly, relatively speaking.

How much are you willing to spend?

How much are you willing to give up?

As you add HP to this car the wieght is going to drop. Such as the addition of aluminum heads which will help with some wieght savings. Also look at putting some parts into your car that reduce the wieght and you could hit your target of 10lbs per hp easily.

3,540 lbs seems awfully heavy without driver, more so than normal.

I think some scales are off or they use 'truck scales' that are calibrated to be more accurate with several tons...

I weighed mine at the track so it should be pretty close, maybe he should try a smaller scale...

Yeah, I wasn't talking about you, but about the original posters numbers

Those big truck/factory scales seem to always read high...

The door sticker on my 90 lx says around 4500lbs.
That's like a small truck.

Yeah, I believe my old 99 ranger weighed in the 3,200lb range.

4,500 lbs is the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR), in which what the car's suspension can safely handle, or something to that effect.

Sorry been away all weekend. Car may be heavier due to subframes and other suspension components. Definitley looking to add aluminum heads but also want a power adder, KB or Turbo. Cost is the hold-up right now. I am thinking I will spend about 5k to finish. Torque will overcome weight if it is high enough. Horsepower is just a by product. Thanks for the responses.
