Power Brake Questions

Hey All,

My fiance has decided that it is time for a power brake conversion. Her 66 has power steering and air but 4 wheel manual drums. The pedal is really firm. I did a forum search and it did not turn up what I was looking for. Would I be better off to order the power conversion from Master power or can I swap a granada power booster in? Can I just go to one of the auto supply stores and order a new 1966 power brake booster and adapt it? What about the pedal is different? I have a pretty good understanding of how these things work...is this a hard swap? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks as always!

it's a simple conversion. I would suggest going to the dual reservior master cylinder as well. There has been a lot of posts on this. I'm suprised you can't find them.
I did a search about 4 months ago and found all kinds of posts. Try searching on "Power Brakes".

you can check out mustang steve's website, www.mustangsteve.com as he has a power brake conversion. also if the car has powersteering, you can also swap to hydroboost power brakes. you can use the hydroboost unit from any ford, lincoln, or mercury that has hydroboost. as i recall mustangs from 94 up got hydroboost. you then just add any power brake dual mc you like, a 67 mustang with drum/drum brakes is a good one to use.
 
It's tricky to fit a dual MC and power booster in a 65-66. You need to keep the combined length of the MC & booster @ 14" or less. The Fox 2.3 booster will work great, but it covers up the clutch rod hole, so you can't use it on a car with a JMC hydraulic setup, or the original-style clutch linkage, but it will work on a auto car of a car with cable linkage. I believe MustangSteve uses a 2.3 booster.

For comparison purposes, a granada disc/drum MC is about 7" long, and a 67 drum/drum MC should be the same, if not shorter. The 2.3 Fox booster is about 4.5" thick. This gives a combined length of 11.5"

I've seen 5.0 Fox boosters on manual trans. cars, and they fit nicely, even with a 1" longer SVO/Mk7 MC. These are smaller-diameter, and therefore a bit longer than the 2.3 units, but they clear the clutch rod hole. I've only seen that done to 67-68 cars so far, but I'll be trying a 5.0 booster with an 8" long Mk7 MC and a JMC hyd. clutch setup sometime (very soon, hopefully)
