Am thinking in advance that I'd like power brakes for my 1969 coupe. The prices for conversion kits are pretty expensive, so I was wondering if there were good used parts that could be swapped in to accomodate power brakes.

I've read that many parts can be taken from a different model car and placed on others with minimal headache and wondered if this was one of those instances. I would be happier taking late model used parts from the salvage yard than spending $1000 on new parts.

What kinds of parts would need to be changed to make it work?

A lot of classic stangers opt for the mid - late 70s granada power brake setup. It is a good setup and just bolts right into your stang with no problems. I have done this on my '69 coupe with ease!

That was the first major thing i did also. Went with front power disc brakes from a 69 cougar. Forgot exactly wherei got them but got them out of state shipping did hurt but was complete with pedal and all. Overall cost was around $600.

Sweet! I know brakes are very important, but I am cheap out of neccessity. I'd rather get used parts and rebuild them and make sure they are ok before using them. Probably go with new wheel cylinders on rear drums and check the front calipers and replace seals and things, ya know.

Do any of you have an idea of the cost? Since I'm taking the entier car apart, I'd like to do these kinds of things, but taking it all apart also means the I have a lot to replace at one time. I'm hopeing to get it on the road this summer, but the roof is leaking now, so we'll have to see. I got a feeling I'll be busy more this summer than I first thought.

It woudl be nice to see a website with detailed instructions on this kind of swap. I've seen a few using new parts, and a couple with just putting disks in front. I may have to get a book on which parts are interchangeable on mustangs. That would seem to be a big help.

You should also consider a subscription to something like Mustang Monthly, they have a new how too article each month and covered this swap in pretty decent detail just a few months ago. I could probably scan it in and email it to you if you want.

I did the conversion for low cost, hence ny nickname! Go to my site and see my Granada conversion. Be willing to hunt, pick apart parts cars, and do the research! Another favorite donor: 74-77 Mavericks!

Ha Ha! Another Cheapskate! I just got back from visiting my car and found out that it apparently dose not have a 9" rear, but it does have the deluxe 4-wheel Drum manual brakes!! Yay!

I'll def. be checking out some sites on swapping on power brakes with discs in front at least. I'm not opposed to making a few minor mods to the car to get it to work. I like the DIY stuff too.

Power disk brake setups are regularly on ebay, and the ones that aren't cleaned up or rebuilt generally go pretty reasonably. Be sure to get one complete, and be sure to rebuild whatever you use.

Let's define what we're talking about: converting to power brakes, disc brakes or power disc brakes. BTW: the brake system is only as good as ALL the brakes, both front AND rear regardless of being disc, drum or a combination It takes FOUR functional brakes to stop a car properly.

If you are "cheap", you may find out that simply freshening your drum brakes makes a world of difference in the car's stopping ability.
