Can I make 400 HP at the crank with a 302 block and have it streetable? My goal is to make 400HP NA, if not i will go with forced induction. I want to have a before I have to replace my motor in a couple of years.

I think it's possible...I've got to be close with my combo and there are a few things I "could" do.....underdrive pulleys,etc...don't want to though.....I think the majority of people only care about what your putting to the wheels...JMHO....I'm sure more knowledgeable stanger's will chirp in...

Everyone has opinions to streetability.

The only 306 N/A car I saw crack 400 on a dyno was a dedicated track car. spinning it to 7200 with a 5spd.

Looking at 7k + rpm Not wise on a stock bottom end. Need a GOOD valvetrain and solid roller cam.

and by 302 block...do you mean stock displacement or a 302 blocked stroker 331 or 347?
 
Heres a 401rwhp 306 example. It'll take a well thought out combo, but it IS do-able. Contrary to what internet racers will think, it made torque down low too :eek: It pulled to 7000 rpm. I talked to him through PM a while back. The cam in it was similar to the one in my car but mines a hair bigger. Its extremely streetable (referring to my cam here)

Now if you're talking a 400rwhp 331/347, then thats even easier with the right parts and will require less rpm's.

No prob as I see it.

Thats only 340 at the wheels.

You can find lots of 300 to 315rwhp combos on these various forums that are pretty mild and have great drivability.

All you gotta do is step up those combos a little bit.

Get more aggressive with choice of intake and cam.

Tune it up good. That ought to do it or put you real close.

I just said crank because That is how the manufacturers rate thier cars and I would like to be able to compete with some of them. I just saw an 03 cobra and made me dream some more. I figure 400 would be in the range of the cobra and i wouldn't have trouble with tech inspection at autoX. If I stayed NA anyway.

What I meant by 302 block is anything you can do with that block. My plan was a dss 331 shortblock. Could I make that kind of power with the TW heads. I really don't want to buy another set. If I had to I heard the 185's would be awesome for a 331. I would rather port my heads though.

I'm just asking so I know what parts I should start buying slowly. Supporting cast TB, MAF, injectors, Underdrives. I held off on these because I didn't want to buy them again or get rid of them when a supercharger came.

If you get a good cam on your setup and an port the heads, maybe a valve job. 42# injectors, 80mm mass air, 75mm TB, fox throttle body conversion, NA AFM power pipe. underdrives, lighten up the drivetrain with aluminum driveshaft, lightweight flywheel, stuff like that. electric water pump.

all kinds of stuff can be done to make you reach that. i don't see it being that hard to do. a standard H/C/I will net you about 300rwhp which is aprox. 345fwhp. you just need another 55fwhp which can be gained here and there. you already have long tubes and a good exhuast.

These threads where it seems like a stock block max na effort is no prob at all to convert over to a blown combo ...................

Well ... It just don't make a lot of sense to me.

If you go for the compression, cam, and other stuff needed for a na combo
then
Decide on a blower

You just don't bolt it on and there you go.

That combo which was maximized for na now has too much compression, wrong cam, inadequate fuel system, etc for the blown combo.

Then you got the issue of a na combo like that converted to blown combo is always having to deal with the issue of splitting the oem block.

I'm all for ... as much hp as possible ... just like everybody
but
To take a pretty healthy oem blocked na combo and take an attitude of

Just slap a Vortech on it ..................

I'd have to say to go blown first in some cases IF the owner is aware of everything a blown combo will require.
