I want to purge the power steering fluid on my son's 99, and go with a synthetic fluid. I can use some help with a flush procedure. Also, suggestions on a fluid wil be appreciated.
usually the turkey baster method is the best. what i did was waited till i got a new rack, then let it drain and filled with mobil 1 ATF. you will have to open up the bleeder on the hydroboost, just make sure to have something on it because it shot ATF about 50 feet in front of the car when i opened mine up.
1. Remove the return hose from the P/S reservoir and plug the reservoir from the place that you removed the hose from.
2. Insert the return hose into a catch container.
3. Start the engine and fill the reservoir with new fluid.
4. The old fluid will flow through the return hose into the catch container while you are pouring new fluid into the reservoir.
5. After enough new fluid has cycled through the system, stop the engine.
6. Reconnect the return hose to the reservoir. That’s it.
I looked in the Haynes manual and it does say that to bleed air out of the rack and steering fluid system you move the wheels from left to right back and forth while the engine is running. The manual also says not to hit the steering travel limiters while doing this. This will bleed the air out of the system if any gets in there.
