power steering pump question

Even if he doesn't you can still run a shorter belt. You just have to run the belt over the tensioner pulley rather than under it and get a larger water pump pulley to give the belt more surface area to ride on.
 
I guess I just can't visualize it, not to say you are not right by any means. Here is groverdill's old setup. There was no smog pump, but you get the idea.

When you loosen the alternator, you take the top bolt out, then you loosen the bottom bolt and move the alternator over to the right to put the belt on, then pry the alternator back to it's mounting point and put the bolt back in.

You do not have to do anything with the tensioner. You just leave it for an idler pulley. Pulling the alternator back into place will put the tension on the belt.

I have done this on several cars but I do not have a picture handy to show you. I will try to dig one up.
 
Thanks guys this helps a little. And yes i don't have a/c or a smog pump. My only problem is i have the ford racing underdrive pullys on my water pump and crank. So what size pulley do i need to step up to on the water pump. And does'nt this kind of defeat the purpose of the underdrive pulleys. When i'm only trying to make more power by eliminating the power steering.

The march alternater bracket you mentioned pn.1465 does it completely eliminate the stock bracket?

Well actually you have the correct water pump pulley if you have the Ford Racing pulley setup.
Remember the underdrive crank pulley is smaller and the underdrive water pump pulley is larger.

So the answer is NO, you are not defeating the purpose.
 
Also with Joe's setup, the water pump would be spinning in the wrong direction. This is what aod92 is trying to avoid.
He must have replaced it with a standard rotation water pump because this would have it spinning the wrong way.

Wow Kevin, you are all over this one. I think groverdill's waterpump in that pic is a standard rotation pump. I thought the stock water pump was reverse rotation? Anyway, in an effort for me not to give him anymore bad information, here is a link that uses the tensioner and moves it to the other side where the a/c used to be. Think this might be his best bet, just my opinion. Thanks for saving me Kevin. :nice:

The only thing this won't do is eliminate the stock alternator bracket.
