Okay, still dealing with the PO's "mods" here and I would really appreciate some help. I just installed a new (rebuilt) power steering pump and am AMAZED by the difference. I must have had ZERO assist previously. But............. it squeals like a BIG pig at the stops, (belt? too tight? too loose?), and it seems to turn easier to the right than to the left. Any suggestions?
Thanks!!

You may need to replace the belt. Once it turns "piggy" and startes to sqeal, it can glaze and still slip. Also, pay attention to the width of the belt and the pulley. Get one that is the same size as the pulley so that it fits down into the pulley so the sides of the belt help with the grip. You don't want a belt riding up high and barely making contact on the edges. No grip there.

Quote: exactly, and turning easier to the right than to the left would mean your control valve needs adjustment and your ball stud in the drag link should prolly be replaced.

Oh-oh! Where is my control valve and where/what is the drag link?

take off your left tire and follow the power steering hoses, from the pump the first thing the power steering hoses go to is the control valve.

drag link is the long bar that houses the control valve, the tie rods, pitman and idler arms connect to the drag link.

It truly sounds like your control valve is mis-assembled or stuck. The pump is squealing because it thinks the wheels are turned fully in one direction (it can't pump through a closed line). Check to make sure the control valve actually moves with the car shut off. If it does, it's not stuck, but needs to be adjusted. Let us know and I'll post the procedure.

Okay, almost back in action (or should I say, OUT of traction?) and will get down to the attempted fix per Ozsum2 & JB66. Report won't be "out" for a week but I just wanted to say "thanks" :nice: and that no ignoring was going on. Minor but regular medical maintenance got in the way.
