Powermaster Alternators - Rebuildable? Repairable?

Sorry, that was pretty rude. Let me explain. I had really, really bad luck with a Powermaster 140 for two years, and when I took it to a personnal friend of mine who runs an alternator repair shop he said they weren't worth fixing. He ended up building me a 130 amp 3G Ford one that put out more than twice what my 140 amp Powermaster did new. He had alternators laying all over because he takes cores, and thinking he may want the old Powermaster I asked him what I should do with it. He said "find someone who you really don't like..."

that sucks. the internal regulator does not work until the unit heats up (after a couple minutes of driving), after that, all is fine until the unit cools down again. I'm hoping this for a simple repair, instead of a costly replacement. :(

I had mine fully rebuilt with a new GM back case, and tested for $74 at a local shop, works perfect!

I had a chrome model but the rear case cracked since they mill all the support away, it arc'd to my fuel rail and started a fire, I feel much safer with the stock GM rear case.

Its good to here that it may be possible to have it repaired. the alternator only has about 5000 miles on it.

I'm gonna call powermaster back on monday and ask them if they sell replacement parts, or offer and type of servicing themselves. If I have no luck with them, i'll start calling around to local alternator repair shops and see if I have any luck.

I paid nearly $400 canadian for the thing. Worst case scenerio, I'll just have to drive the car for more than a few minutes (long enough for the alternator to turn on and recharge whatever juice was stolen from the battery)

thanks for your replys.

GOOD NEWS- I just got off the phone with powermaster and they DO sell re-build kits for their alternators. Its costs $38 and I should get it by the end of the week! By the way, the powermasters part number on the rebuild kit for the 140 amp alternator is p/n #921 and it comes with a new regulator, rectifier, brushes and hardware)
