Hey there fellow Stangbangers...

I currently and eyeballing a white 2001 Cobra convertible that's close to me, and asking price is $21,900, although I'm sure I could talk that down $1K-$2K if I'm lucky.

I was wondering if this would be a good price... It seems to be in excellent shape, with 30K miles on the odometer. Looks to be more than a virgin Cobra!

It has some polished Cobra rims on it, although I favor the stock rims.

It's clean inside-out, and I like white Mustangs... Especially Cobra's. I think they're much easier to keep clean!

I'm thinking about going up there and giving her a test drive. I currently have a '96 V6, and it's been good to me, but it's time for a change.

I was worried about the weight difference between a vert and coupe, but I like the fact that it's more of a cruiser than a bruiser, and I never rag my cars, or race.

I'm sure I would want to take it to the track to find out what it can do, but I'm not one to run and gun, and bang the gears all of the time.

Any help on this would be appreciated! I just could use a few tips as to find out if this could be my next baby or not! Thanks guys!

What does it price out for at www.kbb.com and www.nada.com?

Is it stock? Have you checked the CarFax? Ask the dealer for a copy of the detailed Oasis report.

Make sure the convertible top boot is not missing, they are very expen$ive.

I did KBB and got like $17,900 if it's in EXCELLENT condition. I'll make sure to bring that up when they want to give me $1,000 for my Mustang.

Is the boot the part that covers the vert when the top is down? I saw those on ebay for like $100... Not that bad if it's missing. I'm sure it might be in the trunk. It also has that brake light bar... I forgot what it's called, but I like the look with and without it.

Also, how reliable are the tops on verts? I've never owned a convertible, and have no idea if the noise will be an issue... It's a black top, and looks quite nice.

Noise is not usually an issue in newer Mustangs, the top is well insulated for sound. Visually inspect the top to determine if it is vinyl or cloth and to determine the condition. A new top will run $600 for vinyl and $1200 for canvas. Check for water in the area the top retracts into, check the carpet in the front and back to see if it is wet. Check for mildew smell. Raise and lower the top and watch it to make sure it goes up and down smoothly and evenly. Visually examine the points where the windows meet the top to make sure there is a good seal and the rubber weather strips are in good condition.

If you get the car ask me for tips on cleaning and caring for the top as well.

Good, those were the tips I was looking for.

Taking care of the top would be one of my main priorities. I kind of like the fact that it has no paint on the top, seeing how my '96 Mustang's clear coat and paint is going to **** on the top of the car... Ugh!

Thanks!

The $17,900 is assuming it's in excellent original stock condition. The car you are looking at has a light bar, non-OEM wheels (Cobra 'R' knock-offs from the looks) and an after-market fuel door kit. You may like the car and mods, which is cool, but the truth is, they don't add anything to the sales price of the car. If anything, they reduce it.

I'd try to get them down to at least $16,000, otherwise, walk away. Just my two cents worth

Agreed. Seeing that you can pick up a 20K-30K 2001 Cobra for $16,500 - $17,000.

I do notice the aftermarket parts, although I'll have to eyeball the interior to see how it was truely taken care of.

I'll barter. I have no problem walking away from that deal, seeing how there are Mach 1's available in the area for $18,000.

Exactly... They actually have a sonic blue Terminator with 472 rwhp for $25,900... That's hardly that much more than the '01 Cobra!!!

Too bad it's just outside my reach...
