I ordered a Mustang GT premium November 22nd. With the options I got, it was $26,830 MSRP, $24,560 Invoice. We agreed on $26,000, however nothing was put in writing. I haven't gotten any confirmation number or anything yet, just told me the order was placed. Now it seems like more people are getting pretty close to invoice. What do you think about going in and trying to get the price close to invoice? That's $1500!

Thanks

You can do what you like, it is YOUR money. Ask yourself this question: Will you be happy with the current price? If no, re-negoitate or go somewhere else. Don't forget about the "Buyer Remorse" clause...if you aren't happy take it back.

Always approach your dearlership with an Edmunds.com invoice and TMV printout! Compare their supposed Dealer invoice with that of Edmunds! Never offer more than $250 over Edmunds invoice. It's always worked for me, but it takes time and patience to find the right deal. If all you young guys would apply these simple rules, they'd be rolling out the red carpet for you, rather than sticking it to ya! I know, I hear you, I didn't know the meaning of the word patience when I was younger either, I wish someone would have tried to explain proper car buying procedures to me back then!

I went in with the edmunds prices, but this was the best deal I found in the area at the time (800 below MSRP). I live in Iowa, so I probably won't be driving it until March . If it's delivered in January all I'll do is sit around and wipe it down with a diaper anyway until March. Maybe I'll go in and tell them to put it on hold and see if I can order one closer to invoice.

If you already negotiated and agreed upon a price you should be a man of your word and stick to the deal. Think of it this way, what if the dealer tried to get more money from you when the car came in after already agreeing on a price? I can't believe you're asking this question!

Yeah, I thought about that, what if they changed the price on me. Nothing is in writing, no deposit, what's to stop them from upping the price? I can get mad if they do, but that's about it. I guess they can turn me down if they want and I can check some where else. They won't guarantee any finance rates at this point or any available incentives. Considering it hasn't even begun to be built yet let alone a confirmation that the order has been received, and at this point $1500 is a lot of money for me, it's pretty tempting to reorder later this winter or spring when prices will be lower. I've thought about your point Hoofnit and it's a good point, but the possible $1500 is hard not to think about at this point.

Stopped into the dealer tonight after work. Last week they said they HAD SENT the order in, and tonight they told me they're going to put the order in this Friday, then asked if I would like to get the undercoat/rustproof treatment. A double whammy!

IMO, if they did not ask for a down payment and have not even placed the order yet, I would definitely negotiate a better price. If they won't deal with you, go somewhere else. There are better deals out there than the one they gave you. How about X-plan price? I've seen numerous posts on here where people are offering to get PIN's for strangers. Think what you could do with the money you save....how about stripes painted on!
Good luck!

That's how I feel ODT, think I'll go in this afternoon before they "place" the order tomorrow.

The fact that you did not get it in writing is beside the point. In your own words you said 'agreed' which is in fact a verbal contract with has just as much validity as a written contract, just more difficult to prove. I'm not trying to be an a$$ here but it's really disappointing to see someone go back on their word. Good luck getting your new stang.

Get your deal in writing and put $500 to back it. Until they get $ in their hands, they have no incentive to put in an order. Especially one under MSRP.

Be happy that your deal is under MSRP. Now put some $$$ down to seal the deal.

It's also disappointing for the dealership to tell me they placed the order when if fact they hadn't. Had they placed the order, fine, I would have stuck with the original price. Since they really didn't yet, I told them to hold off on ordering it until spring and we'll talk about the price at that point.

Giving them cash in no way SEALS THE DEAL. I know a guy who put down a sizable deposit on a FORD GT (Not Mustang) at sticker. The car came in and the dealership refunded his deposit and told him that they had decided to put the car up for bids.

The problem for him is that in their agreement there is no reciprosity (spelling???). Furthe he gets a lot of business from this dealership and to go after them aggressively would likely screw future dealings which are highly LUCRATIVE.

I'm glad I cancelled my order. I was afraid the car would come in and they would sell it to the highest bidder since we didn't put anything in writing, which has apparently happened to more than a few people.
