Primer

I am getting ready to sand down my 67 mustang to prime it, I am going to be doing all the paint and body work myself. I had originally planned on sanding down to metal and then putting down Por15, putting the Por15 Tiecoat primer on top of that, and then the topcoat, mainly for rust prevention for the future. However, I contacted Por15 and they said its not really meant to do a whole car, just under carriage, floor boards, etc...So my question is what is the best primer to use or rust preventative? I will get some pics up in a couple days of the car, there is next to no rust on the outside of the car, I am pretty lucky in that aspect, and I will be sanding the entire car down to metal and removing most rust anyways, I just dont wont to put on some cheap primer and run in to problems a few years down the road.

If you are sanding down to bare metal I believe you should use an acid etch which will bite into the surface and neutralize any corrosion that you can't see, followed by a high build primer.

Another recommendation for SPI epoxy and high build primer.
Acid etch is not recommended or needed with SPI epoxy. It is also about half the price of the other brands.
Here is a very interesting forum for professional painters on how most other epoxy primers can be wiped off with thinner and SPI drys hard and will not be affected by paint thinner or solvents:

Unless you are media blasting or chemical-dipping your car, wouldn't an acid etch or other form of metal prep be beneficial for neutralizing leftover/unseen rust before priming?

Another vote for Epoxy primer. I use Dupont, their epoxy primer is like armor. I'm sure other brands are the same. Stick with one manufacturer for all of your paints though, epoxy primer, high build primer, sealer, base and clear.

You can use either etching primer or epoxy primer, most everybody these days uses epoxy primer, it has zinc in it which inhibits rust. As far as which brand you choose, I would stick with a reputable name, Dupont, PPG, etc., I have heard good things about SPI and I believe their price is very reasonable.
