pro m problem

So you think that the stock computers should be able to handle the mods we put them through?

Nate

If your Q is directed to me then my answer is our pcm in our car does not respond to mods as well as the Fox body pcm does in the Fox body cars.

A fact I don't deny but that fact does not make the older pcm retrofit in our car the only or best solution. It was an option that at one time was the only option/solution but nowadays we have more options. The retrofit can be good for some combos but it can also become obsolete if you go far enough with your quest for power or drivability issues become unbearable.

I've just about gotten burned out on the retrofit pcm/our pcm's are a piece of junk statements and I think I'm wasting my time with these kind of threads trying to show peeps info that can be found with ease on this site, Corral, Tuner sites, etc. It has become obvious to me that I'm not helping anyone with this subject so for the LAST time..............................

If you want MAX power & BEST possible drivability on a STREET NA H/C/I combo with complete supporting mods...............

Fox Stang...............will need custom tune
94-95 Stang............will need custom tune

Both pcm's can be tuned with great results equally well by a KNOWLEDGEABLE tuner.

My direct answer to your Q is YES our pcm's will work just fine with mods but at SOME POINT it will need help from a custom tune.

I'm done now :D

Grady, sorry for the confusion but it was directed towards fords2fast4u from his statement above....

i'll not argue that a tuner is better - but im just saying there are other ways to get a combo up and running right. To tell the truth, im just not a fan of paying so much for something that i think should work right in the first place... JMO

You and i agree totally Grady....

I did learn from fords2fast4u the trick about moving the pins in the pcm connector which is kinda cool and means the ProM pih kit is not a must have item if you want to try it.

It looks like you still need the msd ignition upgrade so the least cost you could do the retro fit for would be the cost of pcm & msd.

I'm glad that I saw this thread because I'm having a similar problem. I took a stock 95GT and had the Trick Flow Twisted wedge H/C/I kit installed along with all of the other mods listed in my profile. This includes the Pro-M MAF 75mm. I had the entire kit installed at a Ford Dealer by a technician who specializes in performance upgrades. We had a rough time getting the thing to idle without stalling and eventually ended up with a TPS voltage of 1.15V and the IAC screw at just 1/4 turn from full clockwise. It runs pretty good like that although it does run rich at start up and the idle speed is about 950RPM. The tech that did the install told me to get the PCM tuned. The other thing that it does upon cold start is race to about 2000RPM before settling down. I really don't like to see those speeds at cold start when the oil pressure is low. At any rate I posted a thread a week or so ago entitled Trick Flow Engine Kit Test results and I'm starting a new thread with a .pdf file of the actual dyno results. You may want to check it out. I'm still learning about all this too.

final5-0 I am totally not disagreeing with you. You are correct, and someday i will break down and get a coustom tune... when i have the money

nmcgrawj - yeah, i do.. think that the computers should adapt to mods. When i first started working on mustangs 5 or more years ago, i worked on foxes only. Little mods, nothing major, and i never had any problems with the computer. But with anything car related, eventually you will want to go faster.. which will cost you alot more money. It just ticks me off a bit to spend so much on parts (1000 heads, 300 cam, etc - you know how much mods cost) and then just to have to spend another 400-800 bucks just to get a computer set right to run properly. If the thing runs off sensors - they should adapt to the change in air quantity or speed and thats the end of it... but we all know that this is not the reality, and it doesn't work that way and my opinion that it sucks doesn't change it...

I have a 94 GT and have done a couple mods. I started off with the stock block and added e303 cam, gt40p heads, performer intake, 70mm throttle, 77mm pro-m, 24 lb injectors. I had a little trouble with idle but soon worked out the bugs. Since then I have upgraded to a 347 with AFR 185 heads, rpm intake, trick flow stage 2 cam (.542 lift), 75mm throttle, 77mm pro-m, and 30 lb injectors. If I use the pro-m which is calibrated for the 30's the car will run. It doesnt run perfect but it will run. I have a tweecer now and yes I get more performance out of it but I am not about to say the stock computer is junk. I even tried an A9L conversion and it didnt run any better then the stock computer. So I dont understand why people think the older copmuters are better. The worst thing about 94-95 is that the computer is based of load (or so I understand). If you plan on modding the car, plan on getting a tuner.

My reply is not to agree or disagree but to add to your thoughts.

All of this older pcm is better hog-wash is from the perspective of a guy who is trying to mod his 94-95 Stang without help from a custome tune.

Remember the Fox Stangs have been around for so long, and ours, just a couple of years. Its natural to compare them to each other.

Plain & Simple ...... They are different

Fox pcm's in the Fox Stangs were more forgiving about mods

94-95 pcm's in our Stangs don't like mods so much

If you mod a Fox Street Car enough to make serious power your gonna have to go to a custom tune for street drivability or max power or both.

How is that any different if you go for the same goals on our cars?

Either way, your gonna tune it......again, if your going for more that just a mod or two.

Now about the pcm differences

Fox is rpm based & 94-95 is load based

Any tuner who knows what he is doing can make either one ...........
1)drive great on the street
2)make the maximum amount of power possible

The load based 94-95 pcm in reality can give options that the older rpm based pcm can not.

I can't believe how all of this stuff is ALWAYS taken out of context :nono:

It really is a matter of perspective :D

I guess the misinformation will continue forever :bang:

I'm done now...just had to get that stuff off my chest :rlaugh:
