Hello,

When I was driving on the highway yesterday and shifted into 5th gear, my engine suddently started to stutter. It was like hitting the rev limiter and the power seems like to be gone completely. After waiting for a couple of seconds, everything was back to normal. Any idea what could cause such an issue (yes, I had enough gas)?

Can anyone recommend a good shop in the south bay area California to troubleshoot such an issue? The car is a 03 Cobra.

Thanks,

Thomas

Could be a blown FRPS. Have you recently bounced the car off the rev limiter like during a missed shift?

Did the temp in the car go over normal? Have you ever had the car go into limp mode? When the car senses too much heat it will just bog when you hit the gas and have zero power. After a few seconds the temp will drop and the car will run normal again. I am not saying that this is what happened but it might be.

Wouldent a failure in the FRPS throw a code fault and a check engine light? I have had the low fuel pressure code fault several times when in a high speed sweeper and a low fuel tank. Giving ATL and Aeromotive my credit card solved that problem LOL

Not always. The FRPS on our cars, at least the original ones are known to fail if they get a fuel pressure spike like when bouncing off the rev limiter. The internal diaphragm gets ruptured and can eventually allow fuel to pass through the vacuum line and into the crankcase. This bleed off of fuel pressure will cause the engine to stumble. None of this will throw a CEL, but it usually does store a code in the ECM. Ford's current replacement FRPS has a different P/N than the original ones from what I'm told and it doesn't seem to fail as often.
