Problems after H/C/I

First off let me say HELLO, i'm new here. i previously saw a thread about fixing idle that was great, so i said i better join Stangnet they seem like they know whats going on in the mustang realm.

Anyways i've had problems ever since i put on the the trickflow top end kit. During the install i decided to take off the smog crap and pull the vac off the egr. i had a few leaks here and there and fixed all of them.

The main problem i'm having is hot starts. the idle will jump up and down up and down and die. i also have what feels like a miss when going into 2nd gear on a med rev. it stumbles a little and then picks back up.

i went through that checklist which was great but didn't get much lead way.

things ive done.

clean IAC
set tps
cleaned throttle body
checked for vacuum leaks
reset the idle
pulled codes. KOEO 85,34 KOER 94,44,34

and prob other stuff as well

One prob i had was i decided to test my EGR by applying vaccum to the egr.
the car didn't come close to dying and the vacuum held. but as soon as i pulled the vacuum guage/testern off, the car dies. i'm hoping this will help point me in the right direction cuz a lot of people are going to the strip on teh 28th and i sure would like to go. sorry for the long post

What kind of mass air sensor do you have, what size injectors do you have, and is the MAF sensor calibrated to the injectors? If everything else is fine it sounds like there could be a mass air flow sensor problem.
 
sorry i just realized i didn't tell you even what year vehicle it was.

its a 92 mustang.

So i bought a used pro m CAI locally and i bought the 24's on ebay.
the air filter is pretty bad, some of the coils are bent and looks dirty. i tried cleaning it but that didn't help, it says only use water. i was thinking that it had something to do with the MAF too. but its so hard just to drop 200 dollars on a part that might not even fix it.

Do you have an underhood CAI or does it go into the fender? When I was EFI I had the same thing happen on hot starts. I clocked the MAF meter towards the block and it went away. Elbow in the CAI right before the MAF was apparently affecting the closed loop readings

Just a thought

the one i have on the car is a underhood CAI. i have the bbk cold air intake but i don't have a Maf meter that will work with that one.

The Pro M Maf meter/cai that i have now has the MAF connected to the air filter.

You said you clocked yours towards the motor? Was yours under the hood or not?

mine was fender

what cam did you install...the tfs1?

On a hot motor, take off that dirty filter and leave the pipe open to free air for a minute while you CRC clean the MAF element...let it dry completely and reinstall and start the engine and see what happens

your problem could be more involved, but if nothing else, you know you're starting off with a clean MAF sensor

Make sure it isnt damaged...kinda looks like the filament inside a light bulb

i did and the car wouldn't run with the filter not on, or it ran like crap. And i cleaned the MAF with MAF cleaner and it didn't fix it.
 
you might have a lower intake to block leak...spray some carb cleaner on your vacuum lines and also where your lower meets the block and see if it raises your idle at all

believe me i have, i gone through mutiple cans of carb cleaner trying to find a leak. half the time i would think i would find it and i thought it changed the idle then i would let the idle even out and spray it again and nothing.

i was thinking of using a friends smog machine and see if a leak pops up. i've heard that they actually work but i've yet to try it for myself
 
sometimes a lower intake to block leak will be present but it will be internal and unresponsive to carb cleaner checking. maybe pressure test the radiator...see if it holds or if its leaking pressure into the lifter valley
 
i'm pretty sure the egr is not suppose to kill the car when i close it at idle. i need a diagram or a right up on the egr system so i can get an idea of whats going on.

Putting vacuum to the EGR valve will open it, there is no vacuum going to it at idle so it should be closed.

I use a smoke machine at work all the time to find vacuum, exhaust, and evap leaks. It works well.

yeah but what happens is i put vacuum on the egr and it doesn't change the idle all that much and as soon as i pull the vacuum back off (closing the egr) it dies, and its not suppose to do that.

found out that the Pro M was causing the idle surge. i had a feeling. My car has been going through 5 lug conversion/rear end work the past few months and i finally put a used cobra maf and computer (:crossfingers) and the surging disapeared. i haven't test drove it yet, but on stands it sounds good and preforms great when i rev.
