Problems with factory roller followers?

I recently picked up a Ranger 2.3L roller cam and a set of roller followers on eBay. Some of the followers "rattle" just a little when you shake them, and they have just a bit of the ball bearings showing when you look in between the roller and the housing.

These are the early ones with the cast follower housing.

Are they toast or is this normal wear?
