Profit Or Loss?

Probably have $20,000 in the blue coupe/SN95 project in the near future. It'll be worth much more now in a fox, but I won't come close to making my money back

I have a stack of receipts about the thickness of a dictionary sitting in my office. I haven't added them up yet. I'm somewhere around the $40k mark with my most current build that started late 2010. I sold off about $10k in parts prior to starting the build. The only labor I paid for is paint, rollbar, glass, tint, and some machining work. I also didn't build the shortblock. I guesstimate about 1200-1500 hours of my own labor into it.

I plan to have this car outlive me.

I definitely feel like I did. The paint is far from perfect, but it allows me to enjoy the car more than worry about the car!

By the pics ive seen over the years paint always looked amazing! never seen car yet in person

I "only" have $30K into my car; it still has hatch rust, 1/4 of the suspension has been refreshed in the past 15 years, speedo doesn't work, 1/3-1/2 of the interior needs replacement/refurb, and I've only got GT-40P heads and an Edelbrock intake. My car has mostly sat in the garage since 2000. At one point I built a 331 stock block stroker engine with the 2.1L Kenne Bell with a Haltech engine management system, drove the car for about 200 miles and had issues with the Haltech working when the blower hit 16 psi. Tore it all apart and now the car is close to being a dedicated drag car. Of the approx. $60K into the car right now, $23K was spent on just the long block.

I bought a 4 cyl and a 5.0 for 1500. Swapped everything myself and 3500 for a blower shipped. 500 for nickle and dime stuff. Can probably unload the donor car shell for 500. Could prob get 5500 for the running car. I am about even not including apprx 200 hrs in labor.

Two things I have learned in life never to keep track of how much money you spent on them

1. cars
2. women

Not necessarily in that order. Come to think of it it's about the same for both. You can figure on getting 1/2 back when you get rid of it.

Think I paid $5400 for it in 2005 with 64,000 miles. Body has roughly 73,000 now I believe. Not really sure how much is into it. have a folder about 1- 1/2 " thick for new stuff and I buy a lot 2nd hand, or at least used to. Have got a lot of great deals on parts but I'd say $30k into it. I try to limit myself now to putting $2500 into it a year, unless something breaks then it gets what it needs.

Time into the car...umm all of it besides going to work? At least until a couple years ago. Its coming in 2nd now...

Most I could get is MAYBE $20k but probably a little less. Not for sale anyways.

If they do build a track very local to me like is supposed to be in the works, a lot of time and $$ is going to be dumped in to it. Will try out x275.

bought mine in '06 for $3500, and over the years between crashing it, blowing up the stock aod, rebuilding the stock motor with tfs parts, electrical "fire" (more of a smolder really, but still), then blowing up said rebuild, plus all the mods and fixes......probably have 9-10k in it besides maintence type stuff. might could sell it for 6-7k if i really wanted to and waited for the right buyer, but i have no desire to at all. in fact, once i sell my house and move back to what used to be my parents house, ill probably drop another 2-3k on it almost immediately (rebuild the aod in the shed, converter, vb, and some kind of drag tire setup for the back).

I paid $4000 for mine 3 years ago and probably have another $4000 invested, At least...I've been offered $6000 cash and turned it down. If I wanted to sell it though, I probably would've taken his offer.

Sold my 90 for a big loss. Bought a supercharger for the 95 w the money.

I got my 93 as a trade for my 98 GT. Got the car & a almost brand new Sony VAIO laptop as payment (worth around 1500 at the time, 19 year old kid, lesson learned) wheels about 600, headers and other exhaust stuff around 200, misc stuff to get it running recently around 700, so altogether about 1200 into it. Oh, and about 400 in paint and materials so far. All labor courtesy of me and my dad.

I completely envy you guys who've spent megabucks on your fox. Hell, I'm currently struggling trying to save for some interior replacement parts and suspension replacement parts. H/C/I and other supporting mods for me are basically dreams at this point.

Id say, after the paint is done and everything looks good, i could probably get 4500 or so for it (the market for foxes in great condition here is a dime a dozen) and it'll all be pure profit.

Bought for $3800

$450 for new tires
$600 for gear install
$400 to fix cooling system
$1900 for top end and finishing pieces
$1000 down payment to machine shop for rebuild

And I just spent $700 on new shifter, headers, water pump and everything else I need to finish the build. After everything is said and done I will be in it for 10k and that doesnt include future plans. Once it is back running this summer I think I could get 6k for it. I don't care, never selling it.

Seeing that @Sharad just sold that awesome 89 LX made me think about all of this. I've read the articles that he did when he first bought the unmolested car and immediately started toying around with it and one thing led to another and now it's in somebody else's garage. A lot of time, money and hard work is all a memory for that guy.

Thanks for the compliment, I think? Since @84Ttop won't say it, I'll go ahead and say it. My build was over $100,000. I personally had over $40k in it, and I had great sponsors. It's looking like by the time I sell it off, I'll end up around $30k.

I went into it knowing it would never be worth what I had in it. I didn't do it for an investment or to impress anyone. I did it because horsepower is my only addiction (if you don't count the V) and I can never get enough of it. That car was like mainlining narcotics. Best rush I've ever had!

Obviously, I'm not thrilled about selling the car. It was paid for. It didn't cost me a dime to sit in my garage... I would've kept it forever. But my family had $12k worth of unplanned unavoidable financial crises pop up in a two week time period last month so the car had to go. (I didn't have $12k in savings) It's sad to see it go, but I'm glad I was able to take care of my family.

One thing I learned is that I'll never build another car like that again. Funny Car Cage, C16 only, etc. From here on out, my Mustang projects will be more street oriented. Note- I did drive that car on the street, even with the funny car cage and c16, far more on the street than on the track. It just wasn't practical. You might think I'm crazy for even mentioning the word "practical", but my 2011 5.0 is a 10-second daily driver with power everything which gets 24mpg in the city. THAT is practical.
