Project Notchblack: Black Interior Progress Thread w/ Pics

Ok. A few weeks ago I posted about the little 4 banger notch I picked up for $750. I bought it from a 74 year old woman, and it is in fantastic condition except for some minor body damage. Most importantly, the interior is immaculate, and the only signs of wear are on the driver side seat bolster and some sun damage on the top of the back seat...well, that and the normal mustang gremlins...ashtray door, etc. The realy problem is...it's porno red...and I HATE it. So....

...I'm no stranger to painting one of these interiors. On my 91 hatchback, it was OEM black interior, and when it started to fade I got in there and repainted it. That's also when I learned that Krylon does not adhere properly to soft vinyl (it stays really sticky and never dries properly).

After doing some research, I decided to try the Duplicolor fabric and vinyl paint that is supposed to work on soft vinyl. I used my passender side door for a test piece because it contains the soft vinyl and the hard plastic (speaker grill and lower armrest).

The results so far have been good, and I've gutted a good portion of my car to repaint this weekend (I have some not so good pics now, and will have better ones tomorrow).

Here's my progress so far:

In the Car: The reddishness in the door is the reflective shine from the seat and dash. Door is BLACK.

As for the rest of the interior, the quarter panels, headliner, and package tray, 3rd brake light assembly, and rear seat belts have been removed. I've already put the first coat on the package tray carpet and it looks pretty good. I tested the fabric paint on one of the rear seat belt retractor housings, and it dries quick and definitely doesn't seem to rub off on skin or clothing.

The plan from here is to do all of the pieces that I can, that I won't have to take out in order to put in new carpet, so basically the dash and center console and front seats won't be done until about two weeks from now. This weekend I should have more pics of the quarterpanels, headliners, etc, and hope to be finished tomorrow if weather permits.

I'll keep everyone posted on any issues I run into and any tips and tricks I find. And yes, I am planning on painting the seats. They're in such good shape, that if I have to touch 'em up every once it a while, it's still way cheaper than getting fancy seats....

how much more have you painted? i might have someone that will swap a nice clean grey interior for your red. where are you at in ga?

i love black interior but i wouldn't have touched that interior way too clean i would have just sold the whole interior together.

You paid $750 for the whole car... and I would have paid you $1000 just for the interior! Hell, I would have even drove to you and removed it all myself. You essentially would've gotten the car for free and had $250 to start collecting replacement interior pieces of various colors to paint black. I changed the interior of one of my Capris to black and picked the pieces with the best surface with no scratches, but didn't care about the color because they were getting covered with fresh paint anyway. God man, you just destroyed a rare mint red interior and lost money along the way. FAIL.

Dang dudes, not the response I was looking for...oh well. Seriously, how on earth can you want this color?...UGH. Come down to Georgia and you can pick apart red interiors all day long. This one is going away. And for those complaining, there are thousands of 4 banger cars sitting around that haven't been dogged out. You can spend less time and trouble finding one of those with a decent interior, than worrying about my 1978 shaggin' red coupe.

And for the record, I'm choosing to stick with making this interior black primarily BECAUSE it's in such good condition, and frankly, I don't want to spend time searching for new interior parts.

Now for those of you who aren't wannabe **** stars, I'll have more pics, shortly.

The floor carpet is getting replaced next week. I'm painting the package tray carpet and headliner, and so far so good. The Georgia Mustang's Unlimited is five minutes from my house, so if I need to just buy a few new parts, it's no biggie. Also, for the high wear areas, if the painted surface doesn't work too well, I'll know which pieces to go find.

As for the seats, I don't particularly care for the LX seats, and the driver is showing some wear. Worst case scenario, I buy new seats down the road.
So far, the soft vinyl stuff is working great too, but it needs plenty of dry time even after it's dry to the touch or else it will peel.

I finished the package tray and reinstalled it a few minutes ago. See pics below. I figure this will also be the time I get flamed for leaving all my sound deadening material in the car, BUT in my defense, I gutted my last 5.0, and between the exhaust and the highway noise, I would rather have a few extra lbs. on my car than listen to that crap every day...especially since I have a highway commute to work.

To be honest, i liked that interior. The difference between it and the typical porno red interior is that it's ALL RED, and you don't see that often. Yours was in really clean condition too.

But it's your car, and it seems like you are taking your time to carefully dye it. Looks good so far. Can't wait to see end result

I could probably handle the black and red interior better than this. My brother has a velvet halloween costume of a pimp that is the EXACT same color as my stock interior. And it just feels too late 70s/80s to me. I'm a 90's kid. And for the record, it's definitely still in good condition......just not gonna be red.

Also, some exciting news. I just spend a few hours with my mom and dad to pick up the amp and sub from my brother's 69 Chevelle (he lives 1000 miles away in Texas and the car stays parked here), and found out my mom and grandma can totally recover my seats for the cost of material! How sweet is that? I really didn't want to paint them, and that's the next best deal! I'll be taking the rear seats down to her next week to see how it turns out. Also, when I showed my mom, she start asking me how much I spent on new door panels and didn't believe that that passenger door was painted.

I spent most of my afternoon cleaning up the remaining parts to paint because it was just too hot to paint. I'm going to finish up painting the quarter panel inserts and headliner in the morning, and then let everything set in the garage for a couple of days so that I reduce my risk of scratching it when I install it on Wednesday.

In 25 years when a rare, mint, factory porno red interior is fetching 5x the price of black at barrett-jackson, we'll all look like fools.

That was a very clean example, but to each his own! It looks like you're doing it the right way. I'm forever loyal to SEM products but it looks like that duplicolor stuff works well too. Don't forget, it's all in the prep!! Good luck with the rest of the project!
