Promaster Coil

Ok here is another mystery. About 3 years ago I uninstalled my Mallory ignition on my previous motor. I was trying to save every last mile possible. Well this weekend I began the process of redrilling and wiring up the old system to the new motor (actually 1.5 years old). Well I turned it up with the stock system. Then I began the install. I started by installing the promaster coil. I fired it up and adjusted the timing and idle. Something was a bit weird. At idle the timing was 25 and maxed at 34. So I opened the distributor and blew it out and cleaned up the inner workings. IT is a Comp 9000 so its pretty brainless. Reinstalled and reset timing. I set it to 14 degrees as before top timing still about 34. (strange). I test drove it and it ran hotter then normal. Usually on the freeway at 6pm its at 175-180. Tonight it was at 190.

I realize a bigger coil burns more fuel, but would it effect the engine that much? I really don’t remember the system effecting the carburetion more then 2 rod sizes, and that was with the Hyfire III system too.
