well i'm trying to check the ptv clearance on my motor and the pushrod length but i'm having some troubles...

i understand that i need a solid lifter to check ptv clearance correct?? well the trick flow website tells me i can dissasemble one of my old lifters and make a solid one. How do i get it apart????? they also say to gring .020 off but i've heard not to grind anything from other sources...opinions? or can i buy a solid lifter for a few bucks and not have to bother???

i'm just adding P heads and intake to my stock motor. I'm keeping the stock rockers and cam (stock cam as far as i know) and i'm PRETTY sure i'm not gonna run into any problems but i'd rather NOT be the guy who doesn't bother and destroys something.

How are you going to check PTV clearance and determine pushrod length at the same time?

You need to check PTV clearance with the correct length pushrods. Use a pushrod length checker to determine the right length pushrod to get correct valvetrain geometry, and then use THAT length pushrod to check PTV clearance.

sorry, i worded my post wrong....i'm not doing them both at the same time. Those two things are just at the top of my to-do list at the moment and i was wondering about the lifter. I do need a solid lifter to check clearance right?

What I have found to be the easiest and most accurate way is by using a checking spring and a dial indicator. Or using feeler gauges along with the checking springs.

I've been through the whole solid lifter deal and honesty, **** the person who came up with that method!

Read this article and follow the instructions and you will have done it right!

The feeler guage method works but is a little clunky. I think the best way to do it is set them as a go no go. If you want .100 clearence then set the guages for that and make sure you can insert the guage at every check point.

I used a dial indicator but the rest of the proceedure is basically the same, light spring, roll the motor a bit, push down on the rocker and read the dial. I set the indicator up to read off the keepers. You're only checking where the piston is really close to TDC anyway so it's a pretty quick check.

For checking PR length you will need to use the checking spring. You can use your hydro roller lifter this way also.
