I am going to be pulling the motor out next weekend, Everything is unhooked as of now (exception of trans) -

QUESTION!!!!!!

How is the best way to get the engine out, can i Leave the trans in the car?? Take out the trans first, than the engine, OR take the Engine out w/ the trans together???? I'd like to be able to leave the trans in, but I will do whats easiest --

THANKS

highly debated subject here....

this is only my personal preference, but with a manual car, i usually pull the tranny from underneath, then pull the motor with bellhousing attached...

then again, if you've got an tilt leveler, go ahead and pull them as a unit...if you don't have one, there's a higher potential to popping the windshield with the tranny. Either way you're going to spill some tranny fluid on the ground-even if you drain it completely

Personally I would pull them both at once. I have done it both ways and let me tell you it is one pain in the ass to trie to line everything back up again if you leave the trans in the car.

If I had a trans jack set up I would try removing the trans from under the car. It is pretty easy to pull them both at the same time though, especially with the leveler mentioned by txstang84.

I have never really considered pulling the trans before the motor. Fighting the exhaust into place is bad enough, I don't want to have to fight the trans as well.

I've done it both way.

I pulled an engine and t-5 once. We were stripping the car so we hacked off the exhaust and that made it easier.

When i pulled the engine from an AOD car, we unbolted the trans. Honestly, it wasn't all that much harder.

Lining it back wasn't that big of a deal either. Just make sure you have at least 3 guys there.

Honestly, being on your back while wiggling that trans in sucks. you've got to yank the exhaust anyhow, just lose the driveshaft and trans x member, and yank it all at once, it'll save you a lot of on your back time.

My votes goes to pull both at once. The four bolts that connect the trans to the motor is a PITA on your back. I hate pulling the trans. altough it's not a bad as pulling a trans on a sideways motor. :notnice:

I have a lift that the car is on, and I have a trans jack specifically for my lift, it doesnt matter to me how I do it, I just wanna do it the "easier" way, if there is one.... I can take the tran off the bellhousing, and pull the motor and bell together, that would be simple,
Maybe to pull it, i should take them apart (engine and trans, trans out first, than pull motor), but put them together and put the engine and trans in together at the same time.... maybe.... ??

Thanks!

it's easiest to "pull" them together, but it can be a pain in the butt to drop them in together (unless you get a leveler) as you have to balance them going in. IF you have a lift, yank them as once piece, then drop in the engine seperately, bolt in the trans after.

I pulled the motor and C-6 together (YES C-6, that thing is a hoss!)

I didn't have a leveler either! just hooked my picker up towards the front of my motor and had a buddy sittin on the cowl to hold down the tailshaft of the tranny while i pulled it out....first thing i did was threw that C-6 off a bridge!!

Paul,

my 2 cents is pull engine seperatly. I also installed a C6 in my 88 notch, and the 1st torque converter didnt seat properly in the 347 crank. So i had to pull it out completely again by myself. I used a regular 2 ton jack that has the big wheels on one end and it was fairly easy. I only weigh around 200, but i'm skinny!!!

If its a automatic when reinstalling, make sure the torque converter is locked in the tranny. You'll spin it and should hear it engage 3 times while moving back on the tranny shaft. Then make sure the flywheel and converter are pointing in the same direction, so when you have tranny and engine starting to mate they are in perfect position.

Also if you change the torque converter, make sure it fits in the input on the rear of the crank. My didn't because it was for a 351, and it was 1" to long so out the tranny came. Had to do it again.

y is the c 6 so bad, and again, how does the shifter come off?

It really is as easy as 4 bolts.

Sometimes it is tough to reach them though. Also if silicone was used to seal the shifter plate down it can be tough to break the seal.

So, I guess there can be more to it.
