Hi,

I want to pull the engine in my 65 coupe this week to get more space to do rust repairs and clean up in the engine bay. The only problem is i've never pulled an engine before.

The engine is a 302 and the tranny is a C4. I've got an engine stand and i'll be renting an engine hoist to do the job. It looks simple enough and i'll have help from a few friends but I wanted to ask you guys if you had any tips before I take on the project.

Thanks in advance.

take as many digital photos as possible of everything you take off so you will be able to put it all back together again correctly.............. use ziplock baggies for all the nuts/bolts etc and mark them well...........if you pull it with the tranny attached it will make a big mess unless you drain it first.................

Pull off the crossmembers, fuel line, rad and hoses, export brace, exhaust, and all wiring. Disconnect the shifter linkage if pulling the tranny out with the engine and get a rubber cap for the tailshaft. You may also want to drop the center link. Put up on axle stands to make room to tilt for tranny clearance. As far as engines go, these are very easy.

Pull radiator, of course. Take off fan and fan spacer to give you more room up front to move engine/tranny forward in engine compartment. Engine puller MUST be the kind that will allow you to tilt engine/tranny. Put a littl elube on the threads of engine tilt mechinism to make it easier to crank the tilt mech.

Best of luck.

Everyone mentioned the major points.. I can tell you from just finishing this job myself. It was easy. I too never did a job like this, and it should be easier for you, as I was alone when pulling the engine. Took me about 1 hour or so.

Good luck - post up some pics when your done.
