Pure o2 shot

i might sound retarded but what would happen if i were to instead of nitrous, give my engine a shot of pure oxygen....what would be the outcome.....even if i coupled that with a shot of nitrous oxide would that have a cleaner burn and give you an extra boost in a sprayed application???

That would be a really bad idea. The burn speed would be so fast and intense that it would be pretty much uncontrolled and result in detonation, thus killing your engine. N20 is used, because after the oxygen has broken off the molecule, the nitrogen has a nice effect of slowing the burn speed and reducing detonation. Even so, you know it is still required to reduce the base timing with much of a shot.

It's a great idea! If you like:

Car fires
Pistons shooting through the block/hood
Explosions
Carrying around an 02 tank to feed the flames after ignition

Kewl stuff like that.

A buddy of mine did this with his T/A. It worked well actually, he used a welding bottle running after the regulator and ran the hose before the MAS. He said it was like a 50-75 shot. His motor did not blow up, but I would not suggest using it. The Nitrogen acts as a buffer and saves your motor.

How about LOX and kerosene injected into the tailpipes? Wheee! as you rocket down the track, roasting the competition behind you... :D

This makes little or no sense at all and illustrates just WHY this sort of thing is dangerous. Mass air works by measuring (wait for it) the mass of air entering an engine. ECUs are programmed to expect X amount of 02 per volume of ingested ambient air. If you enrichen the 02 content of that mass of air without tuning for the additional oxygen and less inert gasses then you WILL be running a a very lean mixture. It's that 02 enriched lean mixture that causes detonation and out of control combustion mixtures. Your buddy's check engine light should have been on constantly even if he managed to not burn up the pistons and valves. The signal from the free oxygen read by 02 sensors should have been in constant conflict with reading from the mass air sensor. The computer should have kicked out a code for bad 02 sensors.

Just a thought

My cousin used c02, to spray on to his Intercooler to cool it

His civic was running consistant 13's on street tires, and stock interior

this was with his 1.6L, and a jackson S/C trim

Guys, we seem to have forgotten that when oxygen comes in contact with oil, you get instant explosion. The oil on the valve guides would be enough to set off a nasty intake fire that would blow the intake manifold apart.

Daggar - did you miss the Air Force training flim on LOX? The guy gets his glove soaked in LOX while filling a LOX system in a fighter jet, and then drops it on the ground. The LOX cart tow bar falls on the glove and the resulting explosion blows the towbar back up against the LOX bottle. That made a permanent impression on me as to how dangerous oxygen and especially LOX can be.

Nope... it's called "The Pizza Man" video (due to how the idiot looked who blew himself up).

I would like to mention though that even LOX by itself (other than being cold) is not a hazard. Nor will it burn by itself. Still need fuel and ignition (any flamable substance will do). Injecting pure oxygen into any system SEVERELY lowers it's flash point and increases it's burn rate.

Sounds like fun. Let's try it!

Pure oxygen would work fine......... if it was stable by itself. The nitrogen is to stablize the oxygen. At 500 and some degrees, the nitrogen lets go of the oxygen and let's it burn. If it was not for the nitrogen, the oxygen would ignite erratically. Go boom.
