Well I'm ready to take my car to a shop for the first time in my life. Someone please tell me what my next step needs to be. I checked the rocker it is basiclly in the middle of the vavle stem. I set everything to zero lash then put 3/4 turn on poly lock, set it, and then barely snugged it. And it sounds like a clock. Is it possible that I still need longer push rods even though it is riding close to the middle of the stem. Here is my set up... Afr 185 renegades stud mount 1.72 scorpion roller rockers stock length push rods. PLEASE HELP I am at whits end. The lifters are only a couple of months old.

I'd go 1/2 turn personally... 3/4 usually is too much

At 3/4 turn it still sound like a clock tough at a 1/2 turn wouldn't be even louder? I really don't know this is my first round with roller poly locks.

dumb question. Did you set each valve when it is at TDC-? Did you adjust the valves in the correct timing order? You can't just start cranking them down arbitrarily.

yes and my arm knows it I have set reset and reset these freakin valves. The car starts like everything is perfect, I barely touch the starter and fires up and ticks loud.

If you are using stock length pushrods and didn't check for the correct pushrod length, then you are just guessing. Sorry to tell you but it sounds like you need to check it for the correct length pushrod. You're not going to want to hear this, but it means pulling the intake and at least one set of valve springs off. From the AFR site

Pushrod Length:
This seems like an easily answered question, however there are many variables. Block and cylinder head deck heights, head gasket thickness, varying cams, rocker arms, and valve length can all affect pushrod length. Please see our following best estimates: for 165cc and 185cc standard or .100 long pushrods work in most cases. For 205cc or 225cc typically .100 or .200 long pushrods will achieve proper geometry. For exact pushrod length we suggest using an adjustable pushrod to determine proper length pushrod to be used. For detailed information on pushrod length, please view the FAQ section of our website.

Is it basically in the middle or actually in the middle? Almost every experience I've had with AFR's have been a little noisy, certainly not like a clock though.

Alright this where I'm at now. Order +.100 pushrods and a pushrod lenght tester that I'll use before opening pushrods. But a local motor Guru told me that my lifters need to be upgraded because of the spring load on the AFR's compared to the E 7's. Makes sense to me and I hope it's right because they're 200.00 plus and that's alot when you eyes are half closed. What do you all think about lifter change? Remeber barely off center on valve stem, proper rocker arm adjustment, I start car for a second turn off, and everything is loose again. I know that I have them locked correctly because this is all that I have researched for a week now.Thoughts?

Im not in agreement with that statement....

Those heads only have 120# on the seat with the stock spring and 135# if you have the PAC upgraded 1.29" diameter spring. That truly is not that much and a stock Ford Racing style lifter is just fine. I've been running those for years with a lot more spring pressure with absolutely no issues....

It will sound like a sewing machine especially of you have aftermarket valve covers but it shouldn't be ticking like a clock. Did you set the adj guide plates up correct and have good geometry? Do you have adequate clearance on the valve cover or are you possibly hitting them?

On most 302 blocks with a 8.19-8.2 deck height and a stock lifter I am usually at 6.25-6.4 pushrod using a .040" head gasket... but there are a ton of variables and I measure every single one.
