Put a turbo on a N/A 2.3?

Can this be done?

A guy I know is selling the turbo setup off a 88 turbo coupe and says it will bolt right up to my 93 N/A 2.3L just having to tap the oil pan and have it tuned up.

What do you guys think? He is selling it for $200...sounds like a good deal.

um

to do that you need to change the cpu, injectors, tap the pan then get oil to the turbo, then after all of that you can run like 8-9 pounds of boost i think soemone else will chime in try doin a search also tell the guy you want the whole motor for 200 bucks then just throw the whole motor in and boost away

It's a whole lot harder than he makes it sound...and not terribly rewarding long term...might be fun for the short term though.

Hard is not the question... all projects in the garage are fun in one way or another

Not terribly rewarding..? How so? I'm finally beginning my boosted 2.3 build. I'm not looking to run 12's on it, but 13-14 would make me happy... for now

If it is a daily driver, you never want to do that with a 93 block. The first time it pings or goes slightly lean, you'll:
1. Break the rings
2. blow a head gasket or
3. crack the ring lands
Do it once and do it right. Get a turbo engine.

I thought about doing this with y '93 when I had it, ITs just not worth it. THe potential damage that can be done far out ways the minimal benifits you'd get. Do the Reserch, you can pull a Turbo 2.3 out of a Turbo Coupe easily. Some slight re-wiering, light exaust work and ya ready for some boost. (Its a little harder then I make it seem, but not far off.) ITs a little more then $200 up front but will save you a Mint in Time and money if you blow your motor up.

Not rewarding because he'd have to run low boost to keep it safe and still constantly worry that something doesn't go a bit wrong and cause major issues.

seriosly...everyone says that Turbo swaps cost 200 to 300 upfront....i find it hard to believe that it would be sooo cheap...can someone give me real numbers from their experiences with a turbo swap?

Adding a Turbo

Let's see, the turbo and manifold, injectors, EEC, fuel pump, adjustable pressure regulator, all the oil and water plumbing for the turbo and the intercooler, exhaust pipe and the rest of the exhaust to let it breathe and a 5 speed, clutch PP and TOB with bell housing if you're running an automatic now. Way more than $300...
If you're really interested I have a built turbo motor from an 88TC, stage 3 turbo, big valves in the head, transmission and full SS exhaust; needs a new home.

$150 Turbo (for a decent used one)

$50 Stock E6 mani

$40 Low impedence 35# injectors

$50 Large VAM w/ harness

Are you talking about a fuel pressure regulator or an MBC?

Oil lines and taps are pretty much free.

$20 Volvo FMIC (good to about 15 p.s.i. use PVC to plumb the coldside) or get fancy and use a NPR.

$20 Downpipe or free if you can weld

$100 255lph fuel pump

$100 for stock pistons & rods out of a turbo motor.

So about $530-600 to take your N/A 2.3 to turbo (considering n/a 2.3's can be had for about $500.) Still pretty cheap for the bang of the buck.

They people that say 200-300 for just the engine. If you simply want to drop a stock turbo motor in your car...it won't cost much more than the price of the engine itself.

my 87 had the 2.3T in it, a custom kevlar/hybrid clutch, roller cam and Nitrous for a grand total of $217.00. (that also was including a disk brake 8.8 and a diff 5-speed) But this is considering I do a lot of trading/dealing.
When I do a swap for people I tell them to figure about $500 for the parts (engine included) and little things you may come across.

hm

im on my second stang and second bottom end, between the two cars and motors and all the little piddly stuff im still under 900-1000 bucks. and by the way gettin 13-14 on a stock 93 with a turbo on it is kinda outta range if ya ask me. i could b wrong but im guessin you could run consistant 15's with it but like everyon else said too much to worry about with turboin a stock 93 get the whole motor and then boost away

So how much would a turbo swap cost me including switching and A4LD to a T-5? I don't have the knowledge or equipment to swap an entire engine by myself so how much would labor cost?

Labor would depend on the shop, but thats where it would get up, In Cali anyways, the avg. labor rate was ~$65/hr. You could end up spending WAY more on labor alone then anything else.

If you can't do it yourself (or know someone who can), it's not worth it...labor will kill you. A normal charge for an engine swap is 800-1200. That's just a swap (say a 2.3n/a for a 2.3n/a). Who knows what they would charge to do all the wiring.

I was thinking he was taking the whole 88 TC motor.

Best bet is a swap... I've found a Merkur donor that I just have to get from Illinois to NY.
