Putting my oil pump and pickup on tonight...

This is the first time i have done this. I had the motor rebuilt, got a new stock size pan, and a standard volume melling pump and pickup. Is there anything i need to know or watch out for when installing this tonight? Thanks in advance for any input

Make sure you tap the threads in the block and torque all the fasteners to the proper torque. Don't forget to put in the O.P. driveshaft (Yes, I've forgotten it )

the engine block is on a stand.. and ill have the motor flipped upside down.. you dont put the shaft in till its right side up, correct? someone told me you have to measure the shaft as well.. im lost on that part.. i bought an ARP shaft to ensure i would have any breakge issues, but untill a mustang buddy of mine comes over to help, i dont want to screw anything up

No, there's a star washer sort of thing that goes on the shaft -- you'll put that end down in the block, toward the distributor. That'll keep it in place. Then you'll put the oil pump housing in, and bolt it all down. The reason for that washer is two-fold. It prevents the oil pump ds from coming out if you pull the distributor out at some point and it keeps it in place when you're installing the oil pump. It must be installed -- imagine this scenario...You pull out your distributor to move it a tooth over to allow for more timing adjustment. The driveshaft is stuck in the bottom of the distributor, pulling it out of the oil pump. it then drops out of the distributor, falling into the oil pan. You're next step (after smashing the distributor on something) is to start removing the oil pan to fix it... Not a good scenario. You want to have a little play - don't make the star washer length so tight that it can't move at all. Compare it with the stock one if you still have it around -- should be a good starting point. The ARP HD shaft is good. If your oil pump ever seizes, it'll snap your distributor, causing your motor to shut off. The stock one or the one that comes with the melling pump would just twist into a pretzel, allowing the motor to run without oil.

Sorry if Im hi jacking the thread,but any idea were I could get one of thous star washers?

Did you just pull yours off the stock shaft?

They come with the driveshafts and are many times unusable (I've found) when they are removed from the shaft (they are usually too loose on the new shaft) but you could try. As long as it doesn't move too easily, you should be fine. Otherwise, I'd recommend maybe checking the help section at an auto parts store or a machine shop -- they may have some hanging around.

I'm looking to replace my oil pump too. What part numbers did you use (Melling pump, hardened shaft)?

Yep make sure you install the shaft from underneath and that the star is tight. If not than there's a chance of pulling out the shaft when you take out your dizzy. I had the shaft pull up with the dizzy and fall into the pan. Man you talk about cussing
If you really want to be safe mock up your pan and gasket with everything installed + clay on the pick up. Pull off the pan and check for 1/4 to 3/8 pick up to pan clearance...PB

Pickup: MEL-247S
Oil Pump: MEL-M68
Oil Pump Driveshaft: ARP-154-7904

I got all my stuff through summit racing. This is for a stock pan size... i dont have a crazy engine combo, so i didnt go for the high volume / high pressure stuff... just standard volume, standard pressure for me. if you want something different (high volume, etc... go to www.summitracing.com) and search there by brand

Yea iI dont have a stock shaft to take one of of,so I kinda need one.

Anyone know if the OEM shafts from Autosoze or whatever has the clip on them?Cause I checked thier help section and they didnt have anything like that.Ill go check the mustang shop Mon. and if they dont have it,Ill drop by the machine shop and see if they got some,other wise Ill need another shaft to pull one off of

I am putting my long block together and looking for help on the oil pump driveshaft. I bought a Hd shaft from Ford racing and it came with the "star" washer. It is more like a washer that slides only (with force) the long end of the shaft. Is that where it goes?

I understand the washer is used to hold the shaft in place if you need to take the diz out. Does someone have pictures or step-by-step instructions?

I feel stupid and have a long way to go...
