Brand new to site and love it! Does anyone remember when Ford ads always had quality is job#1? Problem,I bought a new 04 GT in Sept of 04.the car is still brand new in my book with less than 17,000 miles on it.On Dec 17 09 I had driven about 25 miles when the oil pump went bad.The motor is now locked up and it took Ford all of about three minutes to tell me that I wouldnt recieve any help to repair or replace the engine.Any suggestions ???

Unfortunately you are probably SOL as Ford doesn't like to take care or warranty issues even when the cars are actually under warranty still (see the thread about the issues with the TR-3650 trans in the tech forum).
Quality hasn't been job 1 at Ford in about 40 years as far as I can tell. I used to have a 2000 V6 stang and the exhaust flange broke off the manifold one day. When I pulled the manifold off I was amazed at how terrible the quality of the welds and the design in general was. I ended up rebuilding both manifolds rather than replace them with more stock crapola.

Tell us the rest of the story? What mods and who installed them? I find it very hard to believe that the oil pump would fail on that car without someone screwing with it.

The '86 has no bearing on this - how many miles does the car in question have? From your original description, it sounds like you drove it for 25 miles after you bought it and then it died, so... 17,025? 
Underdrives are a possibility but it could also just be plain old bad luck. Somebody's gotta be the one guy who's oil pump fails prematurely. It sucks when you're the one guy though.
Do you like the car and want to keep it? If so, get a low-mileage used or a remanufactured motor installed. If you can do all the work yourself then it'll be cheaper than paying a shop to do it. But either way, it's cheaper than buying another car and in general, these motors are very reliable and durable so there's no reason you shouldn't be able to enjoy the car for a long time.

ooooh boy here we go. Yes i too would like to hear the rest of the story, maybe your car is a lemon. I'm sure if you had gotten a camaro you would have gotten a much more quality built car
Not to say im not biased a little, but i couldn't be happier with the quality of my 99 mustang gt. I got 109k miles on it now with 15k of that being supercharged and I don't have one complaint, it still runs like brand new. My 03 f150, ill go out on a limb and say its the best vehicle i have ever owned. I could Not be more pleased with it. IMO ford makes well built vehicles and the quality is top notch, unfortunately when you dog on them and treat them like **** stuff breaks...
You know, instead of rebuilding them you could have replaced them with a nice aftermarket shorty header for under 150$. But, then again, i guess you can't please everyone.

Yeah I too am curious I'd it had a set of pullies. Maybe they were piggyback ones? I feel ya on quality. Was taking apart my gt with54k and noticed the power steering pump pressure line has be leaking all over tha damn rack. Hound your dealership. My parents f150 qa out of warranty but very low mileage whe a harness caught fire because it was routed where it got pinched under the intake manifold. They only charged him for the parts and not labor because it had less than 49k I think and he raised hell !
I don't see why ford should replace an engine for a 6 year old car. If you own a TV for 6 years, and it stops working, even though you use it rarely, should it be replaced by the manufacturer? No.
With only 17k miles, it sounds like you barely drive the car enough to keep the important parts lubricated. Cars need to be driven regularly to keep them operational. Without mechanical motion, bearings and seals dry up. Also, I would be willing to bet on a cheap set of underdrives being used with no crank damper.

Yeah I probably could have gotten some aftermarket headers but I had the equipment to fix then right for free (other than my time) and at least that way I knew it was done right. I wasn't implying that GM is any better or has any less quality issues but I do know that if I gave my customers parts that looked like the manifolds I pulled off I would be out of business in a hurry. I wish I had pictures of the welds and blockages on the manifolds I pulled off but didn't think to take any at the time. I am glad that you are happy with Ford's quality but I know a lot of people who aren't. That being said, I still bought my 01 GT last year but only because I know that if anything breaks and I can't get good parts from Ford or the aftermarket, I can make the parts I need. If I had to pay someone to work on it I would not have bought a Ford (or any other "domestic" car for that matter).
And any manufacturer who claims that quality is their highest priority but has manufacturing plants in China is a joke.

Ford having a plant in China also has absolutely zero bearing on this issue, especially since none of the vehicles built overseas are imported to the US market. What exactly is the issue with them being a global corporation and making money in foreign markets, anyway? Apparently it's only acceptable for foreign automakers to build plants here, but not for the US automakers to build them in foreign countries...
Don't have an issue with them being a global corporation or making money in foreign markets. I have an issue with them claiming that quality is their top priority and then putting cheaply made crap on the market and refusing to resolve problems when they inevitably pop up. I don't expect perfection but they should be willing to step up and take care of cases of obvious manufacturing or material defects.
bhuff30 I see where you're coming from to a certain degree,but lets be realistic.I've never considered buying a 25,000 dollar TV but if I did then yes I would expect it to last lifetime.I dont have a problem with anyone making money but if your going to sell to the world at least stand behind your product.
I know quite a few guys on Modular Fords how have had their Modular Mustang Racing street/racing oil pumps internally fail on them and leaving

It's not that surprising to me though since years ago I had a Modular Mustang Racing 4.6L street Mod 600 engine fail on me due to several
failed rod bearings at only 10K miles.Needless to say I will never be
purchasing anything from Modular Mustang Racing again.I also gladly change
my own engine oil before it's due.

With how many PI 4.6's there are out there, buy a low mileage 600 dollar mill and drop it right in.

Does your car have piggyback underdrives? Piggybacks are the ones that bolt the stock dampener onto a smaller pulley for the belt. They are total crap and cause problems like this. Only things piggybacks are useful for is to give to people you don't like so you can watch them have all kinds of issues and laugh at them or throwing them at annoying ricers
Either way I fail to see why ford should pay for anything on a car that is 7 model years old.
