Question about differential oil and friction stuff

I am about to take the cover off the rear differential in order to "see what it looks like". Its leaking a little so I'm going to reseal it....(I know I've read on here to use a sealant and not a gasket)....

My question do I need to use some friction modifier (is that even the right thing to call it?)? Also, what kind of oil do yall like to use.

Also, is the trac-loc in the differential? I think mine needs a rebuild but I would like to at least know what I'm looking at.

The trac lock is the differential, I use Royal Purple Synthetic Gear Oil in my rearend then add Amsoil Slip Lock to it, any friction modifier should work. Buy the time you buy the discs and clutches and if you need the the spider gears and s spring, you could buy an Auburn.

A good quality synthetic gear fluid shouldn't need any friction modifier. I have run Redline and Amsoil with no issues. They do recommend if you do get chattering then add the modifier but only if it bothers you. Just make sure your clutches don't go in dry....a rebuild kit is around $50.

I would add the friction modifier no matter what oil you use, for a few bucks, better safe that sorry.

Well figuring most of us have a fill plug on our covers it is very easy to add later if needed.

Thanks for the replies.

I'll look for the fill plug and if I have one I'll wait on the friction modifier. If I don't then I'll put some in.

I did jack the car up today and spun one of the wheels. This is my ghetto method of testing the traclok. Both tires spun in the same direction while turning just one. Maybe my traclok is ok, I might just be a little low on fluid. This will change tomorrow.

I used the part synthetic gear oil they had at AutoZone. It was around 5 bucks a quart? They said it didnt need the modifier, but it was only a couple bucks so I threw it in just for piece of mind. After the new clutches I installed for the TracLoc I had now probs. Nice being able to burnout with both tires.

Another one who adds the TL later if needed (when using a synthetic which claims to have the additive already added).

I have to ask: if you dont have a fill plug, how will you put new fluid in?

Lookin for one wheel peel is a decent method of checking the condition of the TL (what better dynamic is there to check it. Some folks TL does fine on crappy tires but at the track with stickies, the seemingly good TL lets go).
