The muffler on my 85' has holes in it, and isn't too quiet. I took it to Midas and to replace it from the Cat back is 360$. I have another mustang, an 83' that I'm using for parts. I removed all the bolts and the pipe is sitting on the axle but I can't seem to get it out. Do I have to remove the axle? I could also take a hacksaw to the back of the curved portion, but I'm not sure what this would do. I wouldn't want the fumes sitting under my car would I? Any help would be appreciated. I'm an aspiring mustang fanatic.

Jack the car up by the body so the axle is hanging...then wiggle the pipe out. Don't cut it.

Pulling exhaust

Pulling the entire exhaust system is a real bear (if not impossible on jacks). An easy fix is to cut the pipe behind the muffler (do a clean cut). When you install, use the short connector pipe you can get from almost any parts house to put the two parts back together. Use clamps to hold it on temporarily, then go to a small muffler shop or if you have a buddy with a wire welder and weld the short connector and pipes together.

However, you might want to investigate the cost from a small muffler shop instead of Mida$. I just got mine done (cats back) and it cost me $160 and it was done in 2 hours. Then you have all new parts insteaded of a bunch of rusted out stuff that might fall apart in 6 months.

Stinger said it... let the axle hang down and muffler/tailpipe assembly comes out with some persuasion.
