I am planning on purchasing a used 2002 GT sometime in September/October as a birthday gift for myself. It will be my first Mustang ever owned and I am psyched.

One question I have however is how come at some cardomain websites, some people with 2002 V8 GT's have only around 250/255hp?

I thought V8's come stock with 260?

I dont want to be ripped off or anything. Is that any way I can tell how much HP there is other than a dyno?

Thanks.

260 is factory flyhweel rated horsepower .
Rearwheel should be in the neighbourhood of around 230 give or take.

The advertised 260 HP is a flywheel rating. But what we talk about out here is a true RWHP rating. The 99-04 GTs, rated at 260, actually generate about 220-225 at the wheels on a 5 speed, a bit less with an automatic.

the 99-04 gts have 260 hp at the crank not at the wheel.....hp at the wheel will be anywhere from 15%-25% lower than whats at the crank....when u dyno ur car it rates hp at the wheel not the crank so when u see someone with a 02 gt saying their hp is 230 dont freak thats normal

To clarify, The 260hp is Net Brake Horspower.(BHP)
It is measured from the fywheel with all accesories AND full exhaust, using a brake to apply load on the engine.

I don't understand them saying 250-255 if they're stock. The numbers in my sig are completely stock with ~1200 miles.

My 2000 GT has very few mods (X-Pipe,Catbacl,CAI,75mm TB) and I have 277 RWHP SAE/ 312 RWTQ... I think every engine varies a bit...

Engines don't vary that much! Actually I think it's the dyno that varies this much...I mean, this just doesn't add up...about 55 RWHP over stock with a mid pipe, catback, CAI and TB?

He must be referring to modified Mustangs RWHP numbers. Your numbers are right on par with what a new stock GT should crank out...actually a few higher than I would expect to see. But no two dynos (or dyno runs) are equal - and, in the end, they're just numbers. A better number is how quick and how fast in the 1320.

Every engine varies with the elevation its at as well as the calibration of the dyno.

Here is my graph before the TB or CAI. Dyno-Comp in Scottsdale, AZ did all my dyno work.

My car has been on the dyno about 5 times at 2 different locations... All the numbers are within a few HP/TQ... I dunno maybe I lucked out... Although I did buy the car used, and it has always felt quicker than any other GT I have driven so there may be other stuff done that I haven't noticed yet...It whines like a MOFO, everyone asks if it's blown, but I dunno what would cause that.

WHO KNOWS!? LOL
