Im building a shortblock right now for my supercharged 46. I was thinking about going to a 302 but my engine builder told me that stroking a 46 is only good for NA and not boost. He said it will dramatically decrease the life of the motor. I though this was a bunch of crap so I called my tuner to see what he thinks, he said the same thing. I have never heard of this..... What do you guys think?

I would ask jfitz (jim fitzgerald) on here since he has a stroker with a KB. I'm sure he could offer a little advice.

What kind of power levels are you looking at making? The 4.6L already has a huge stroke (longer than a 351W in fact) and suffers more from a lack of bore. As far as asking jim fitzgerald it....I guess you could, but I'd be more inclined to speak to his builder (MPH I believe) and as ask them? If anyones going to know how they hold up longevity wise it would be a qualified engine builder who churns out dozens of them a year.....not an owner.

Either way, if you're not shooting for the stars on all horsepower counts, just a standard rebuild is probably far more suitable and cost effective in the long run.

Our cars already have a long stroke, actually the same stroke as a 5.8L What we need is bore. Now with a big bore kit, you can make more power as you unshroud the valve.

I know MPH makes some decent and very reliable Big Bore stroker engines which is what JFitz has if I recall.

The beauty of forced induction is that you can make up for cubes with boost. Build it with strong internals (and a stock stroke dimension), slap a capable blower on it with a small pulley and a 2V will make more power than you can use on the street.

Ok great, thanks guys. I'm just gonna grab some .20 over CP's and throw some manley H beams in there with a cobra 8 bolt. I can probably run around 20 pounds on that. And in the future I can just get a boss block if I really want displacement.

Does anyone know what the rod length is on the 5.4 triton? Maybe I can just slap my stage 3 heads on that block?

Again....what horsepower levels are you shooting for? The stock nodular iron crank is more than capable of holding up into the 550-600hp range under normal RPM ranges. So if your projected figures are below that, you may be spending money for nothing with the forged crank.

..and yes, your heads will fit the 5.4L (since thats what they're off of in the first place) but you'll run into issues with finding an appropriate intake manifold to work with the set up after that.

I have done some research into strokers and from what i gather is that the increased piston side loading will decrease the engine life due to excess cylinder wear. piston coatings slow down this process but not to the point that you will get the same life out of a stroker as a built 4.6. unless you plan on only driving your stang a few thousand miles a year i would not recomend a stroker as i have been told you will be lucky to get 75,000 miles out of it from what i gather before the compression takes a nose dive. just stick with the standard 4.6 and build it for boost.

mmr has some good deals going on right now on there shortblocks, some are 200 off the regular price. there 800hp shortblock is 2599 and there 900hp is 2699. unless you are a hardcore do it yourselfer id recomend buying one and selling your current engine to make up the difference.

I only plan on making 550 on my first setup, but a year later I will push for high 6's. And I need the cobra crank not for HP but rev. I plan to shift at 7k

High-6's, huh. You do realize you're looking at about a $40,000-$50,000 investment bare bones minimum, right? And that's without the cost of the car!

650rwhp is very attainable, but still plan to sink $20,000 into your car.

You might be able to pull it off with a T-Trim, but you're going to really have to push it. The Ysi would be better suited.

Yes but you will have quite a bit of dough to get those numbers.

You will need heads, cams, fuel system, built tranny, built rear end (don't need it to make 650 but you will need one if you plan on racing), IC, 8 Rib Kit, Built Motor, full exhaust, and prolly some spray to to hit 650rwhp.

I have a T-Trim and I'm making around 500rwp but evrey one thinks its making more than that with the numbers I run at the track.

All I can say is get ready to spend a lot of money and don't plan on getting it back. I wish I would have went with a Cobra now. I might still have some money in it but atleast I could get mid $20k out of my car instead of mid teens.

EDIT:

I looked at the Ysi and Vortech told me that its not very street friendly and you need to rev the car out alot more. When I talked to them about upgrading they told me to stick with the T-Trim.

Sounds about right to me.

When I was at 516 with my s-trim I ran a best of 11.26 at 129.18 and the best tap of 130.89. That was in cold air 50* at a 550' track.

I went to the track with 598. This track was 1300' and it was 84*. I ran a 11.2 the first run with a 129.56 trap and a 1.91 60'. The second run I stood on it. I ran a 11.1 at 124 but I chucked the #8 spark plug shortly after going into forth. I probably melted number 8 on the first run.

My fuel pump duty cycle was between 94-97% on the dyno. I think it leaned out because it also melted the electro on the #7 sparkplug. I'm installing 2 Aviator fuel pumps this weekend, so I hope that takes care of it.

600 RWHP!! Nice.

What do you think this setup will make (what I have currently):

Forged shortblock with 17cc dish pistons
stage 3 patriot heads
comp 270's (NA cams, hope it doesn't affect boost)
75mm TB and c&l plenum
bbk longtubes
s-trim with a 3.18 pulley - 6 rib
huge paxton 3 core intercooler
anderson power pipe
lightning MAF
vortech race BOV
ford gt pump with boost a pump
boost a spark
42# injectors
tuned

???/???

And in the future I would be upgrading to:

convert s trim to t trim
60# injectors
reichard racing manifold (oval setup)
twin 62mm throttle body
110mm MAF
03 cobra tank with dual ford gt pumps
smaller pulley with 8 rib? crank pulley maybe? 8 inch?

???/???

What do you think jivepepper?

I also see that you modded your BAP and FPDM. Are those mods necessary do you think?

Also, what dish are your pistons, im trying to figure out where you got all that power???
