after i do gears i am gonna get a tune. i see alot of these big HP cars that have professional custom tunes on them. is this really superior than your standard hand held tuners? keep in mind my car is 90% street driven

When I get my tune, I'm gonna get it professionaly done. I'm gonna have them use the DiabloSport Predator. I could do it myself but I trust the local shop a lot.

The professional tune will measure AF ratio and keep you safe with the most power. I definately would get it done by a shop.

Every heard the phrase "One size fits all"? Is it always true? Nope! The canned tunes built into the Predator/SCT/Superchips tuners are pretty conservative and are not really custom at all. They need to take into consideration the many different mods and combo's an owner may have. A true custom tune performed on a dyno can be tweaked to meet the specifics of your car and your current mods. It can be dialed in specifically for your car and as a result will almost always make more (& safer) power. There are also additional tweaks a custom tune can perform that isn't available or user specified via the handheld units (like shutting the shift light off or disabling the boost bypass). A custom tune is superior in all ways as long as it's performed by a professional who knows what they're doing.

Since your car is street driven, why are you changing the gears? Just curious...

With my mods i think most people would say i dont need a tune either but i think it was a smart move considering i went with intake and exhaust i would want to make sure the a/f ratio was right on and that i wasnt runnin to lean. I did get some nice gains out of it and had the traction control disabled. It also improved my gas milage a little and increased throttle response. I think it all depends on how safe u want to be. My car is my pride and joy( next to my sons) and i didnt want anything to happen to it.

point is, its a waste of money and you arent hurting engine without having a tune on those little of modifications.

it is not a waste of money if it gives him peace of mind. I would also bet he comes away with more horsepower as well.

I drive mine on the street every day, and I did gears. isn't that one of the first suggested mods, for NA cobras, like the pre 03's. The only reason I would go back is to gain a little more mileage, but I don't see that happening. it made a very nice improvement in powerband-6th gear which I don't have, but if I did, I would go 4:56, or blower. just my 2 cents, chris
oh yeah i probably would have embarassed my self with a gto, hadn't I had the gears.

i never said it was a daily driver, i said it was primarily a street car. this is due to the fact that the nearest 1/4 mile track is the next state over

let me rephrase my question, if the handheld tuners do add some HP, then would it be better to just have a custom tune? is going into the engine the only cause for a professional tune?

I'm in the same boat. it would seem to make sense to wait until you get a maf, or injectors, or something major. you might be able to adjust some things, but were already setup to run on premium gas. but for 400 the sct2 looks alright, as long as somebody around there uses the software to change tunes with. I believe you can go back to stock, if you do mess something up. good luck

BTW, they don't make hand held tuners for pre-99 cars...

A custom flash tune or chip would be a much better way to go anyways...you'll get the most out of your combo with an experienced tuner that knows what they are doing...

HOGWASH

My STOCK cobra was WAY out of wack.

Just throwing a Diablo tune made the car run smoother, hit the redline faster and MPG went up.

Remember Ford flashes cars to fix problems, like pinging.

So real easy for a stock car to have a bad factory tune

I don't look for peak HP, drivablility is way more important.............

How about just having a dyno run with the air fuel read out???? Then you'll know whether you need that $500 tune or not. Peace of mind for under a $100 bucks may be the way to go.
