Quick description:

289 2v engine, totally stock.
The valve covers are orange (could be red that had faded I suppose).
There is a factory looking sticker on the valve covers that says "289 Special".
Auto tranny.
No Hipo parts at all.
That was what they called the standard 289 2V engines in 64. The higher performance versions had gold valve covers. Manufacturers have been tossing around names like that for years. My mom's 73 Torino wagon was a "custom deluxe", which, near as I can tell, meant nothing.

There wasn't a 2v 289 offered on the 64 1/2. The engine choices were 170 L6, 260 V8, and 4V 289 V8. The 289 was a D code on VIN and was painted black with gold valve covers. It was the high performance option for 64 1/2 but is really a lower compression A code engine which makes it ideal today because it runs well on 87 octane fuel. The true HiPo engine (K code) and the 2V 289 (code C) were not introduced until later in 65 model year.
degins is right, there was no 289 2v in early 65 (aka 64 1/2). Except that the 289 HiPo came out in the summer of 64, before the introduction of the rest of the 65s.
I never saw an early v-8 with that label on a Mustang. Sure it's not a swap?
