alright, so my bosses sister in law takes her 93 maxima to the dealer for something and they tell her that her radiator has no coolant in it and that her upper and lower radiator hoses are leaking. so my boss brings the car into the shop and what do you know the radiator is full and the hoses are not leaking are look fairly new. so i start looking at the ticket to make sure she just didnt misunderstand the guy and low and behold the tech actually wrote that the upper and lower radiator hoses were leaking and that the radiator and no coolant in it and this is the kicker....her wax valve is leaking on her car and she needs a new one. now i tried to reason this one out and figured he was talking about a water control valve for the heater but i think he was just trying to get something by on a female. you guys every had to replace a wax valve?

only when I replace the blinker fluid, its only happens once in a long while, and if never talked about because its soooo top secret by the gov, the blinker fluid and wax valve are actually made of volital compounds that could explode at any moment, and has to be kept HUSH HUSH!!!

Perhaps it was the bosses sister that needed the wax?

Or maybe if he was looking at the radiator he thought the plastic petcock plug,was the 'wax valve'?

Idk,I would have asked him to take another look then droped the hood on him.

a google search reveals something on a few honda forums that some ricers are talking about. supposedly if the said "wax valve" is leaking the car will idle really high and surge really badly.

If there's no coolant in the radiator, how would one pinpoint a leak?

He probably meant the t-stat with regard to the wax pellet.


Or a flashback was involved:

In the old days, there was a wax pellet thermostat for inlet-air-pathway regulation (when cold, some air to the carb came from a heat-riser. This closed off when the engine got warm). They only leaked wax and air though.

They had to have gotten the invoices crossed or something man.

No such thing as a "wax" valve. they are trying to scam her. i used to work at a dealership and i've seen people do similar things as far as scamming peeps.

Why not pressure test it and see if it is actually leaking? If I had a car come in the shop w/ no colant, the first thing I would do is fill it up and pressure test it.(hence the reason it was filled when you looked at it)

i didnt see anywhere that coolant had been leaking. you can see the dried up coolant if its been leaking. i think they just tried to get one over on her

Yep. Usually you can see the crud where it leaked. Why not pressure test it? It'll take you 2-3 minutes..
