question for ASE mechanics

I got my 09 GT/CS about a month ago, and I've already hit 2500 miles. Is it worth it to change the oil and filter now, before 5K miles? My reasoning is that the oil may have junk in it from the breaking-in process.

I'm pretty easy on the car. It's a DD, and I plan to go with Royal Purple or the equivalent from here on out.

Should have changed it at 500 just to get any flakes from burrs out.

I changed mine to synthetic at 1200 miles and always have done it at under 1200 miles whenever I get a new car (regardless of whether synthetic was already in it). I've heard you don't have to with new cars but I guess I'm superstitious.

Do it if it makes you feel better. It's an inexpensive maintenance item.

I changed mine to castrol GTX at 500 and then to mobile one at 1k. That's probably a bit more than is really needed, but like was said, it's fairly inexpensive to do for a great deal of peace of mind.

whats up guys. i have a 2000 gt and im wanting to take the cats off. whats the best way to do it without the ck engine light coming on?

Yes. The filter should be sufficient to get any metal flakes out of the oil flow. I think the issue with new engines is the metal particles that stay in the pan. Most engines today don't require the oil change after 500 or 1000 miles. I have heard it from a former ford master tech that it isn't something you need to worry about. I will probably change it after 1500 miles, just to get a decent synthetic in there.

i know with my friends brand new wrx they recommended after 1000 miles changing the oil, and not beating on the car for the first thousand miles.

i am gunna change my oil every 3 months,i know they recommend like 5 months or whatever it is for these cars, but its a simple task, and i'd rather do that and spend a little bit extra instead of how most people are and don't even bother changing the oil. on my old car it burnt oil so bad it changed it for me. had to refill everytime you drove it. haha.

Break in procedure on a Subaru is different than Ford.

This forum is very paranoid about oil. If you guys ever get worried or have doubts, get an oil analysis.

PS, I just read through the Service Manual (full manual that the Service Technician's use) and it makes no mention of break in period. It says for normal driving conditions, you should change the oil for the first time at 7500 miles. If you beat on the car, change the oil at 5000 miles. Looks like the standard oil used from the factory is a syn blend.

The newer ford engines do require a specific break in period. (it is supposedly done in the factory during manufacture?). I do believe that I read somewhere that the oil that is put into the cars at the factory has a special additive to help collect any of the metal particles and keep them in the oil pan for the first regularly scheduled oil change and shouldn't be changed until then because of this, but I don't know if that has any merit or not. I do know that the '05 and up mustangs come from the factory with synthetic oil.

But for what it's worth, I changed mine at 500 miles to Royal Purple.

You should see the Vette forum; I swear some of those people change their oil every month/every 500 miles.

I change the oil (Mobil 1) on that once a year (about 7500 miles) and the oil life monitor always reads around %40 oil life left.

Got Mobil 1 in the Mustang as well and I'll likely change it once a year, right before winter; likely at ~ 5000 miles.

I think a lot of good oil gets thrown down the drain but hey, if it makes someone feel better, have at it.

Yeah, if wasting money makes people feel better, then who am I to tell them they are wrong. I just like to make sure people know they are wasting money on the early OCIs. People are really paranoid on oil forums as well, but they actually test their oil so they have something to worry about.

oh i know, i just figured that it was interesting how the car companys are different.

from what i've heard ford is basically like, drive it like you stole it off the lot. subaru told him don't rev the car past 4 grand.
