Question for certified ASE mechanics

well i wont lie there are some people no matter which school you go too whether it be UTI, WyoTech, or a local community college that just dont care when they go to class and dont pay attention. And then there are the ones that actually wanna learn something. and Wyotech has manufacturer specific courses for Ford, BMW, Audi, Chevrolet, etc. And also some people just dont learn as quickly as others.

To the OP: It varies. Typically, domestic dealers and independants pay a little more. Alot of the independant shops are hourly, and dealers flat rate. Again, it varies. I think the highest paid tech at my dealer is making around 23/hr. I'm at 15/hr flat rate. If I was commuting north I could probably see 18 - 20/hr fairly easily. I have 2 ASE's. Didnt help my pay much, but might help get me sent to school. Toyota requires ASE's to be certified.

ya i would like to know this also. there have been many WyoTech grads that have gone on to be on tv shows like xtreme 4x4, overhaulin, worked for major race teams in NHRA and NASCAR. WyoTech grads in chassis fab which is going to be one of my majors leave this school with 98% job placement right out of school. Wyotech grads are ready for the business in half the time also. All the instructors here have been in the business for many years have owned shops of their own or managed others. some have been in the racing business.

Damn these schools. UTI took 22k from me, and what do I have to show for it? NOTHING. You get no degree (unless you take an optional course to get one) and no ASE or any other certifications. Job placement? Ha, ended up doing that on my own. I had MAYBE a few good instructors. UTI only requires the instructor to be ASE certified in the course they teach. For some instructors that meant NO field experience AT ALL! Interviewed at several places, none cared about my UTI "training". If I did it again, I would have went to a community college and atleast got a degree. Whatever these schools attempt to teach you, you will have to re-learn again anyway. Screw those schools. And god help the recruiter if I ever see him again...everything that came out of his mouth was a lie.

End rant.

What is the average hourly wage for a certified ASE mechanic?

Im going back to school this spring and Im gonna take their Auto.Repair course and I was curious as to the pay.

Thanks

Looks like you're getting some solid advice in here. I came across this forum looking for similar information myself. This info on auto mechanic salaries might be of use to you as well. And of course, you're always gonna make more working at the BMW or Audi dealership than for a standard all-makes-serviced shop - so your mileage on these figures may vary ;)

i was making $14 hourly and 10% of every job i did at the old GoodYear shop. i have 2 ASE certs and was going for more. i hated the hours and management and being severely under appreciated for the past 6 years so much that i took a severe pay cut to get into a better job.

i'm now at a body shop and the labor rates are STUPID low but that is dictated by the insurance company. $42 an hour for body work (old shop was $85 an hour) i like the job and the people there a LOT better but i still wish there was more money to be made.

i think the money has a lot to do with where you live. the cost of living here is low. i can buy a NICE new house for under $150K.
