Roush question for those that still have stock saleen shifter

If you still have your stock saleen shifter, I have a quick question. I have a 2002 s281 N/A, and just noticed something yesterday. Does your shifter when in a gear have some slop in it from side to side? I have never noticed this till yesterday and dont know if something is wrong or if its always been. But its really noticable in 4th and 5th gear. Slight in 3rd and none in 1st or second. What i mean by this is, if your driving in 5th and grab the stick and move it side to side there is about a 1/2 inch of play. IS this normal?

i noticed the hurst/saleen was a lot sloppier than what i was used to [ive had pro5.0 on all my cars] so like the rest i changed it for that

The Saleen/Hurst shifter is really lousy. Not even the nice Hurst shifter.

FST Ford is right on about the pro 5.0. A lot of guys also like the Steeda tri-ax.

Before you drop some dough why don't just swap out that poor rubber bushing ( between the handle and the top of the shifter/trans ) with some aluminum shifter bushings. 20 bucks. If you still have probelms, go out and splurge on a new shifter.

I recommend the Steeda Tri-ax, I have it and love it. appearance wise you can't tell the difference, but how it feels is the biggest difference. I threw my old hurst shifter away but then I did switch to a Tremec TKO anyway.

I Think i will go with the steeda tri ax after comparing a few of them. Is it hard to install? Is there any tips I should be aware of before install? I think i remember reading that once you get the shift knob off that the boot and trim just pull up since its only held on by clips, am i correct? Also, will the stock momo shift knob work on the triax, i like the ergos of it. thanks.

Yes it will go directly onto the shifter. It's very easy to install. Remove the bezel and then there are 4 screws that you remove the shifter boot cover then there are 4 more screws for the shifter itself. Reverse order that and you're done.

I was about to order the Triax, and went the MGW route. Its on its way.

How do you get the MOMO shift knob off? I thought they just twist off (counterclockwise) but then somebody mentioned that momo shift knobs are held on by 3 allen screws. And if that's true, where are these allen screws?

Mine has a couple of set screws that I have to loosen then I just unscrew the shifter knob from the lever.

There should be an aluminum collar at the base of the shift knob. Unscrew that and underneath, you will find three setscrews.

A friend of mine went from the stock Mustang shifter in his ’01 GT to the Pro 5.0 which he loved and then to the new MGW which he says is even better.

just finished installing my MGW short shifter last nite. WOW, what a difference. This thing shifts like butter. Its soooo much smoother then the stock shifter. Its also a little shorter shifts. Not as much as i thought it would be compared to the saleen shifter. With all the people with GT's putting it on, they made it sound like it was freaky short shifting. I guess the stock GT shifter must me REALLY horrible. But I do love it and it was worth it.

The only thing I couldnt do was get that momo trim ring back on to cover up the threads and screws for the shifter knob because the handle is about an inch to short. It looks really ugly without it, anybody have this problem and what did you use? i was thinking maybe cutting out a leather strip and gluing it around the bottom of the knob so it looks like it all blends.
