Questions about 351 blocks

Rick, PM me a price. I am curious. If its a PITA to add it all up, then don't worry about it. As for my goals, I am looking for around 450rwhp, run pump gas, must be streetable, not looking to shift past 6200 (want to stay with in stock rev limiter) with an afr 205 head and a victor 5.8 EFI intake and an ed c roller cam. bsically a 10 sec n/a street car. Money is tight right now, but as soon as I go back to work, money is not tight anymore ( I do union telecom work, so im just waiting to be called back to work, hopefully soon!)

Just an off the cuff remark, I'm kinda biased but...........have notice that most 351 strokers with 205's dont make the hp mine does. Just what I've noticed, one if I remember correctly on the corral made the same if not a little more. You WILL need new headers anyways (should run at LEAST 1 3/4).
mike.

What does a set of 205's cost anyway?? My "R" heads were $1480, if price is close than just a matter of opinion. Both are great heads.

The Trick Flow's definetly are a great head no doubt about it, but correct me if I'm wrong when MM&FF Magazine did flow and dyno test comparison's on both head's and other's the AFR 205's were ahead by a noticable amount in both area's.... I belive the Trick Flow's placed 2nd behind the 205's. I could be wrong though, I'll have to go and check my issue's and find the article. I'm sure the Trick Flow's are cheaper then the 205's so maybe they are the better buy??? All I know is they are both great head's and one may perform better on a certain combo then the other and vise versa....
I love my 205's (I'm Biased As Well So I'd Say 205's Make More HP :D ) and can't wait to get the car on a chassis dyno to see what kind of power that 408 is actually making. Not quite as much as you Mike as you got a bit more Cam(For Now) & Compression but it should be fairly close.

NO FLAME WARS!!

There are cars with the same combo's with AFR heads making more power than mine no doubt, just saying mine makes a smidge more than most. The curve on AFR's is probally better though. Please, dont let this start into a TFS VS AFR war. BOTH ARE GREAT.
mike.

I'm Not Out For a War either... like I said it depend's alot more on the combo....
Both Head's Are Great is Correct... End Of Story.
Out of curiosity Mike.... What Spring's are you using with your head's.... I just think that's amazing getting the RPM's your getting out of that 418 with a Hyd. Roller.... :hail2: I could see it with a Solid but a Hydraulic....?? It's usually unheard of to hear a Hyd. Roller engine perform that high without floating the valves.
I'm using Comp's New Bee Hive Spring's w/titanium retainer's, so I should see some pretty decent RPM's as well.... havn't really gone past 6000 yet as motor is still fairly new..... on the dyno we'll see what she does.

Mike unless you go with a 64cc+ head my motor will not be able to run on pump gas, static compression will be way to high.

If your going AFR I'd go 225's over the 205's on the big Windsor. I assume this motor doesn't have to pass emissons?

Mike, make me an offer on the machined block w/ girdle/studs (since it was aligned honed with the girdle and studs) It appears the rotating assembly will not work for you but the block you need, I have a guy who seems serious about the rotating assembly, I can help you there as well :) Maybe we can make one big deal?

Rick- Check your email!!

Guys, what heads i use is still up in the air. I need a head thats gonna support what I want w/o going past 6200. I was hoping a set of 351 BBK headers would work in 1 3/4". I'm not trying to build a race motor. I plan on buying the parts in stages as I can afford it. 6200rpm max shift, 450 to the wheels, under 11:1 comp for pump gas and 10 sec potential et's on motor is my goals. Streetability and reliability is a must as well!

I'm gonna be using a roller cam, so i'll need those linked lifters, there about $400 or so i believe?

You can get vertical locking lifters for much less than that. I just got a set for my BOSS 302 block for around $200 from my machinest.

Wouldn't volumetric efficiency be too low to utilize 225's? Especially since he'll be building the engine slowly?

Giddyup, the 185's would KILL my 408 and would make it a complete waste of time, money and energy. The 185's are for nice 302-306's and mild 302 based strokers. AS for as TFS quality, I have TW heads on my car for about 3 years now and the quality was fine, NO problems. AFR's are cnc ported so i'm sure the ports look better than a cnc machine trickflow head. Not turning this into an afr vs tfs debate. It looks like the afr's will be better for what I want. I did a quick check on flow #'s (i know i know) and the 205 heads outflow the tfs R's. Although, Mike is making INSANE power with his out the box R heads  I'd like to se what kinda power 408Stroker5.0 makes! Most likely i'll do the afr 205's but im sure once I talk to Ed he's gonna sway me to the 225's. I was hoping to avoid needing custom headers and the 225's exh port is raised too much for an off the shelf header I believe.

Rick, check your Email man!!

Mike

EITHER head you choose or Ed recomends WILL make killer power no doubt. I'm happy with the "R" heads, just me though. Maybe next year I will send them out to TEA for a port job and throw in a custom cam from Ed, 650fwhp N/A would be nice :p
mike.

LOL, now i know why my car's so slow, stupid trickflows  I'll worry about head choices after I get the shortblock all finished and i'm actually working :rlaugh:

Rick, email me back man, i'm ready to work out a deal for your block!!

Be prepared it gets expensive in a hurry... As Ed Curtis told me "take what you think it will cost, double it and add a grand" and I tell you that is the truth.
Amen to that. I drove all day and all night to pick up my current SVO shortblock. Cost me a pretty penny too... Be carefull with the mid year blocks, they don't care for 750+ horsepower figures :bang: Spend a few extra bucks and get it built by someone you trust and you might be ok.

Good luck getting it under a stock hood also. I have the HPM mounts, and there is no chance. I've had the edel. victor intake, my current spyder intake, and it was carbed at one time also. None would fit under a factory hood.

Ohh yeah, I made my numbers with factory TFS track heads that I gasket matched.
