I drained the oil in my car today. I forgot to get a filter(im an idiot) so I let the car sit while i went to get a filter. I installed the filter and oil and after the first startup the engine made a kind of knocking noise for about 15 seconds and then went back to normal. The car probably sat for 45 minutes when i went to get the filter. How bad was this noise, or was it bad at all? Just curious.

Nah. You were running with little to no oil for a few secs. Even if you replaced the oil & filter all at once, but didn't add a little oil to the NEW filter before install, this will happen.

Avoid it in the future by adding a little oil to the new filter.

That's pretty normal. My car does it every time i change the oil.

If you add oil to the filter it helps like previously said

I never get this sound... I always change the oil and filter with engine at normal running temperature...

Dude!!!

You are so screwed. You just made chicken noodle soup of your pistons. You might as well have taken your pistons and beat them with a set of vice grips and a volcanic rock!!!

Not really. I've done the same. I hear this when I run synthetic. Its like water, and takes a few seconds to get mixed in real good and do its job.
