quick question about FMICs

I asked this question in a thread on another forum and got nothing and was wondering if maybe some of you guys could answer it for me?

I have looked at picture after picture of various FMIC setups and have seen people completely remove the bumper support and other run some kind of tubular setup. After looking at even more pics it seems like the FMICs only stick out a 1/2 inch or so past the bumper support mount. My question is has anyone ever tried using some kind of a spacer to move the bumper support out from the FMIC? It seems like you could just space it out a little and then zip tie the foam that is in between the bumper support and bumper cover to the support and then slowley shave the foam away untill the bumper cover fit. It seems like a simple thing to do but I am wondering if I am missing anything since I have never done a FMIC on any car let alone a stang. Thanks.

That is exactly how I am installing mine, I went to the hardware store and bought four 1/2" aluminum spacers (very solid) and plan on just shaving the foam a bit. I mocked it up and it looks as if it's going to fit perfect.

But I wanted it up front in the grille:
