Well, last night me and a buddy were just out and about looking for something to do when we come across a redfire 05 gt. We follow him, end up talking with him for a little bit about the car we head out. We cruise for a little bit then we hit a light. Usually I dont race on the street anymore, but this time I just had to.

Light turns green, we both roll out in first holding it til about 15mph, then we both hit it. First gear we were about even, hit 2nd and he started pulling on me a little. End of 2nd I shut it down with him almost a half a car ahead of me.

Only mods done to my car are a catback and drag radials.

His car was stock.

I was a little surprised at the outcome, I thought it would have pulled a lot harder then it did.

Either he was not "gunnin" it, or he sucked as a driver.

No way you should be even close in your car with "just" Catback.

Thats what I thought. And when I asked him if he went WOT he said yea, and then asked me what my car was rated at from the factory HP wise and he looked really surprised when I told him 240.

i think the new gt's are overrated..........they drive sweet as hell etc...........and the suspension is miles better than our car...........and traction is much better.......i don't think they are as fast as they are supposed to be..........until i see a dyno of a stock one.......with no mods.....i am sticking with that......if they put out 300HP stock at the crank.....then they should dyno around 260 at the tires stock......thats only accruing 15% or so loss through the drivetrain......

we'll see.

i dont know guys, that sounds about right, once u would have hit 3rd of 4th gear he would have started pulling you a lot harder, u can stick with em pretty good down low though

Yea, I figured it would have pulled harder from a roll, but I am not too keen on racing on the street anymore because of a previous run in with a leo, so I shut it down early.

Just because someone goes WOT doesn't mean he is shifting quick or shifting at the right rpm...

The stock 05 Gt's dyno around 270rwhp...look around on the 05 boards...so they are not overrated...

Even in that short race he should have pulled a bit more than that...and it would have grown to a bigger gap the faster you went...

Actually you are going to find that these cars are slightly UNDERrated...sounds like the race was too short to really get an idea..another theory..maybe he isn't a "bad" driver..but he hasn't owned his car very long and has not yet figured out how to drive it to its potential..

Sounds like you went a short distance,,not putting down your car,but if you have went a full 1/4 mile the gap would have been much bigger.IMO

the auto already put down 260s and the gt 280

oh and one word applies to this story. Traction

Why is traction an issue in the "story"...they both didn't spin...from the factory the 05Gt isn't going to lay rubber from a roll (only if you want it to)...suspension/weight/gearing/tire/etc all have their effect on traction...it wouldn't be safe from a consumer standpoint to where if you floor it in first you loose traction (in case a potential accident is to occur)...

What do you mean the "autos" dyno 260 but the "gts" dyno 280? You mean the 5spd?

you think that car is going to hook? WTF

my car on street tires with 246 would spin well into 3rd gear.

it spins drag radials now until the top of 2nd

and yes i meant 5 speed, it was a typo I am very tired and about tpass out from the exhaustion of the weekend

My car with 300rwhp doesn't spin in 3rd gear or from a second gear roll and I have bald street radials...like I said it is a matter of many different factors: Current state of suspension (worn, new, stiff, weight transfer)/tires/gearing/etc...

Don't judge a car on power by how much it can spin...an 03 Cobra can punch it from a low-rpm roll and not spin and it has 390lbs of torque...like I said from the factory they are not made to spin like what you assume...cars have changed...it isn't all about how much you can spin...

I couldn't bark second gear when I had bolt-ons, 373's, full exhaust...but I've seen a geo metro chirp second...does that meant he metro is faster?

The car will hook...a Viper with 500hp can hook in 1st gear but again that all depends on gearing/weight/ suspension...

viper has 335s and a 2.65 fist gear

a stock gt WILL roast the tires in 1st gear.

as does a newer gt

its also weight distribution too
you have a heavy ass glass hatch. I know, i have had one. I gurantee you you would spin here. the streets are so oily and thats another factor that you are assuming isnt present. You are obviously arguing one extreme versus the other. yes an 03 cobra can and will fry the tires and will wheel hop the crap out of it from a roll in 1st at times. there ARE streets that have teeth and i can hook in 1st on street tires and then there are some which i dont hook completely until about 50 +

That is the outcome I would expect for a couple of reasons:
-It was a race on the street, not the freeway, which 50's are good at.
-epracmetcon, I'm sure you are a good driver, and one who is more fermiliar with your car, since the 05 driver couldn't have had his car for more than a week or two.
-It was not between an 05 and a nearly stock 5.0gt. It was a nearly stock cobra.

A 1 1/2 car length loss is about what i would expect. Just wait year or two when guy will be running around in 05's GT's with full exhaust, DRs, and 4:10's. ouch.

Only to the top end of 2nd? There's more than a few Hondas that could hand you your ass in that speed range -- gearing, torque, traction, and technique all play a very big role there. If you want to see what kind of difference the extra horsepower is going to make, try going to the top of third next time.

Yes and those gears/tire combo on the Viper doesn't allow it to spin unless you want it to...I just was with a guy with an 04 Viper on Saturday and he didn't spin...it squatted down and went...

I drove a stock 95 Gt (5spd) and it wouldn't spin in first from a roll...

I OWNED a "newer gt" (check sig.)...it didn't spin in first from a roll...

My car weighs 3180 (less than my 2000) with a steeper gear and slicker tires and it didn't spin...

I've rode in an 04 Cobra (1100 miles on it)...it didn't spin except a slight slip around 3k...

I've watched a video of an 05 Gt (it was on this site) going thru first and second gear from a roll and it didn't spin in 1st (chirp in second)...

Well your saying I didn't put in the "concrete" factor...well then why are you assuming all these cars will spin without you using a concrete factor...you need to do more research on why a car actually spins and doesn't...it isn't strickly power...I figured you had been here long enough...

There are a lot of factors...go do some more research and come back...
