I agree.... Valentine or Passport 8500 ... Personally, I wanted the Valentine, but couldn't afford it at the time, so opted for Passport... has worked great for past 3 yrs...but, NO RADAR, regardless of make, will get you past LASER.. once your detector goes off, just pull over cause you've just been tagged!.. Instant-On K/KA band RADARS differ.. If they are constantly shooting over a hill, you'll pick it up.. if not, then TAG! SO, best advice.. slow down... I should know.. just got tagged by instant-on coming over a hill this weekend..lucky for me I pulled over immediately...I was clocked going 85 in a construction zone that was decreased to 45mph.. after we talked for a bit, he wrote me up for going 10 over the posted 45mph..WHEW! I couldn't have been arrested johnny-on-the-spot for reckless driver ( there is a GOD! )..

I've had good service with my Passport 8500.

Ive got the Valentine 1. Nicest thing ever. But seriously there is almost no point in the dumb things. Lasers are out and cops can nab you so fast my $400 radar couldnt detect it. if you have ?'s u can PM me. but i do have one.

Also another good idea would be make your car quick enough to get away!

Its still possible... not every town has cops in a 5 mile radius... u could get away. If your lucky.

i've never seen nor heard of any car that can out run a cb-radio...

BEST advice I've seen on StangNet to date! Don't even think about trying to outrun an officer over a speeding ticket . . .

Laser isn't an exact science. My uncle, with four others, developed the first laser detector technology for Bel back in about 1993. They spent many days out on the interstate with laser guns on tri-pods. Things haven't changed much since then. In order for the officer to get a reading on your car, he simply has to hold the gun SUPER still and hit a flat spot so that the laser can bounce back to the gun. This is why you will see officers parked along the shoulder of a highway with laser guns versus off on the side of the road, because they need to get a straight shot at the oncoming vehicles. The hood, windshield, front fascia, etc. can all contribute to scattering the laser signal and not obtaining a reading. The license plate is a popular target because it is flat. To avoid laser on the cheap, you certainly can angle the plate down somewhat, put a plastic cover over it with rounded corners, etc.

As far as detectors are concerned, I've not ever owned a Valentine product. However, as a travelling salesperson I travel with lots of people that have them and they all speak highly in regards to them. On my 2k3 GT, I use the K-40 undetectable front and rear system in conjunction with a Blinder Laser Jammer. The K-40 system includes remote receivers that stash under the front grille and inside the rear bumper and has about 4 miles of range front and rear for X, K, and Ka. The Blinder uses an additional 2 jamming / detector units under the front grille that detect and jam laser guns. I have seen some poor reviews on the Blinder system since I got mine, but I can tell you first hand that this system has saved my butt LOTS of times. K-40 is the only brand I'll use in my car for radar. This stuff wasn't cheap, but if you want the best you've got to pay the dough.

The LEDs and piezo beepers are installed in the instrument cluster. The entire system can be turned off via the flick of a switch so it is un-detectable -- even to radar detector detectors.

I was reading recently in Motortrend or Car and Driver, don't remember which, but law enforcement has come out with a new lazer type gun that's actually mounted to a digital camera... they see you, tag you and take a picture at the same time.. when the picture prints, it shows YOUR car, YOUR license plate # , date, time AND speed clocked.. it's virtually fool-proof.. the down side to consumers is that even if you tried to challenge it in court, the cop DOES NOT have to appear... his proof is your car's picture..you lose..

Emerging Threats Tip Scales In Police Favor
"At the El Paso testing, Motor Trend was able to check out a few radar devices that offer law enforcement to again tip the balance back in their favor. The most notable are laser guns with integrated cameras, now entering service use. The same technology that has made digital cameras so popular and affordable is being applied to traditional laser guns, where a heads-up display (HUD) shows the officer the targeted vehicle and when he squeezes the trigger, the front of the vehicle is photographed and the image is time/date stamped with distance and speed automatically. No longer will you be able to claim in court that the officer incorrectly targeted your vehicle. With a camera-equipped laser gun, the officer's testimony of speeding with no corresponding visual evidence will be a thing of the past. Laser guns currently outfitted with digital cameras include the LTI Digi-Cam, Kustom Signals, Laser Atlanta, and Stalker.

Other near-term future threats are in-car video systems, as seen on reality television shows, that can be integrated into in-vehicle radar and laser speed measuring devices. In El Paso we checked out Stalker's new StalkerVision. Like camera-equipped laser guns, StalkerVision gives irrefutable visual evidence of a speeding violation and in some jurisdictions offers the advantage of substituting for the required appearance of the officer who issued the speeding citation. No longer will you skate on a speeding violation if the officer does not show - he's no longer required to be in attendance, just the incriminating tape or digital image. In jurisdictions where employed, the plead rate now approaches 100 percent guilty."

I stand corrected! Technology does indeed march on . . . nontheless, a good laser detector / jammer should give you enough time to detect the laser gun, slow down to the posted speed limit, turn of the jammer and cruise on through.

On a side note, they park vans along the road here and use Ka photo radar. A friend of mine got TWO such tickets during lunch breaks. You could see him clearly behind the wheel, the passenger, and rear seat occupants. All were easily identified!

Valentine has very effective advertising.

I have a Bell 8-something. It works just as well as any radar detector would -- as a backup to smart speeding. You have to know the road. Recognize when you're a sitting duck. Shield yourself behind other cars. Know how to taunt ricers so they show off and sniff out the speed traps. The list goes on...

Escort 8500 owners look

Have an original 8500? Starting about Sept Escort will begin upgrading (I'm sure for a charge) the 8500's to the new 8500 X50. The 8500 does NOT protect you against the new "POP" radar, the X50 does. I called the Escort Store here in Cincinnati and this is the info I was given. A word to the wise---

Without getting the super duper like $700 ones, from what I have read the new Bel RX65 is supposed to be the best radar detector out there. Even better than the Escort 8500X50 and the Valentine 1. And the good thing is it's a little bit cheaper if you're looking to spend the money.

I have an not well known PNI Traveller II. It is a vey good unit considering it is available at WalMart for $129 and is on clearance at some stores for $90.

It can be used with a 12v source or cordless. For the money it is awesome and it isn't ranked all that bad either.

I just called them....they will be offering an $85.00 upgrade with both hardware and software for current 8500 owners...FYI

I use the cobra radar detector $100 at walmart does its job just as good as an expensive one. Havent had a speeding ticket sinse I bought it.....I never have had a speeding ticket...
