I decided to finally get a radiator now that I am home....

My stock radiator had an intlet and outlet on the passenger side. I am now using a late model engine/early model timing chain cover. I have not bought a water pump yet. I want a universal 19x22" radiator (up to $200.) It seems like all the ones I find have the inlets and outlets staggered....not on the same side.

This poses two questions:

1. Does anyone know where I can find a universal fit Radiator that is aluminum and has the inlet and outlet on the same side (passenger)?- i looked at griffin, afco, and through summit.

2. If I cant find one with the inlet and outlet on the same side...can I order one with an inlet and outlet staggered and buy a water pump that will match that setup? or does it not work like that?

If you use the late model water pump you can purchase the Howe that has the staggered set up. This is what I use.

Cheers.

If I use the late model water pump...that is a reverse rotation pump correct? Would that work with a stock Vbelt setup?

How much did the HOWE run you ?

"allcar", I am going to have to call in back up here. My water pump is not the reverse type and it has been years since the radiator was purchased.

Others please jump in!

allcarfan,

If someone here can verify, you can use a '70 water pump that has the inlet on the drivers side. This would allow you to retain the v-belt setup and use the AFCO radiator you are looking for.

This should help

You'll have to swap the timing cover too. The timing covers also changed with the water pump in 70. You're better off with the staggered radiator, they cool better than the same side ones.

I got a Howe aluminum radiator thru Crites Restoration a couple of years ago. It's the 19' x 22" and was a simple bolt-in on my 69. Just had to modify the top mounting plate. The best part was that they asked me what side I needed the inlet/outlet and I have them both on the passenger side. Cost was about $200.

OK....

so I need a 70-78 Timing chain cover...a 70-78 water pump.....a staggered inlet/outlet Radiator....and I can still use my stock 302 Vbelt system.

Is that correct?

Someone double check me here. I believe the "Chevy" radiators have the inlets and outlets both on the passenger side. Howe would have that set up also.

Just some facts for you.

Crossflow radiators ( tanks on the side instead of top and bottom) are all staggered inlet and outlet, the only exception is some of the early VW plastic aluminum rads.

I can't give you an application, but water pumps are amde both ways, depending on the car they go in. You'll have to research to find which one you need.

If you get an early pump, the timing cover will be the same,( the reversed timing covers are for the later reversed drive pumps.) however all your mounting brackets for accessories will be different.

The timing covers are not all the same. If I could post the pics here, I would. The difference is plain to see, not even close. Not to mention that if you could use the same cover, the timing pointer would be hidden by the water pump inlet. And now that I think of it, the balancer's timing marks are also in a different location as well to align properly with the pointer. There are at least 6 or so different small block timing covers that I'm aware of, that use different water pumps. And in addition to that there's 3 different ones for the 80's std motors ( the Crown Vic's and such) but the difference in these are the fuel pump bosses or lack of that feature. There were at least 2 different covers for the early motors ( 221-302) up to 69 , then there's the 70's covers, then in 79 the reverse rotation cover appeared with the new Stang's. Then the 94-95 Stang/Explorer/Mountaineer cover. There may be more that I just haven't run across yet.

I wouldn't bet on using your V belt system after changing all that, some of the balancers have different offsets for the pulleys. Your's may or may not work with the 70's balancer. An easier solution would be to use a longer flex hose to reach from the pump to the radiator. I know this doesn't look good in the few cases I've seen it done ( usually done with 2 flex hoses butted end to end) but Summit Racing list's a long ( 44" or so) flex hose in their catalog that would work. It's available in black or stainless finish

Your right about the timing pointer, but the pump will bolt right up. The ones I have done I just made my own timing marks and pointer. I actually did the same thing on my 70 351 with air, because the OEM setup was impossible to see the timing marks, so I made a pointer to bolt to the timing case bolts and remarked the balancer with a straight chisel.

post your email address and I'll send you the timing cover pics I have that illustrate what I'm talking about. The one 60's cover that I have pics of won't accomodate a 70's water pump.

I keep forgetting that you guys don't have a ton of parts laying around. I did Aero's recently and I just took a peak at it, I swapped the case cover and the pump on that one. But the pumps will swap out. You'd just have to do the pointer swap.

If you guys figure out what you want to do , I've probubly got a cover I can donate.

D, send me the pic you have to ac.rad@verizon.net

NON that I have seen. All the GM xflows I've ever seen are staggered.

I think the best way to do this is to get an early style cover, early style pump, and the extra long radiator hose and run it along the bottom of the front support. At least then, I KNOW it will be right. Im sure I can tuck it away...or even fab a piece of polished stainless steel to go over it.

I wonder if I can get a radiator shop to braze on a 90 degree angle lower intlet/outlet rather than the 180 degree one. Then, I wouldnt have to have such a severe bend in the radiator hose.

Opinions?

Oh...WORTH...if you have an early style cover from the 60s...Id like to take it off your hands. We could easily work a trade for the other stuff im doing for you. Shoot me a PM if you have one.
