I just picked up a 96 mustang. I got the car home and figured out why it was so cheap. The fan will not come on. I found out the fan does work by splicing into the wire. Now I am going to set up a toggle switch for it. I was trying to think of a way to hook it up so that it just comes on when the car comes on. I was trying not to hook it up straight to the battery but can't figure out any other way. Do you have any info that will help?

The fan is normally controlled by the CCRM I believe. This allows the PCM to switch on the fan under control with other devices (eg A/C). You could connect up a thermal switch in series with the power wire to control the fan solely from engine temp, or you could use a toggle switch to control it manually (least recommended). Problem is there are two fans but it is not 2 which come on most of the time. The second fan comes on for back up if the first is not pulling down the engine temp sufficiently ( for example in a high load condition like pulling a heavy load up a hill at slow road speed). It will also come on if the first fan fails & increase in engine temp above a preset limit is reached. Do not take a chance with the cooling system, if it fails it could destroy the engine or at least the heads/ top end in short order.

Disconnect the electrical sensor from both temperature sensors on the intake manifold. Does the fan turn on?
If yes, the problem is with the temperature sensor.
If no, the problem could be a fuse or in the CCRM. Start by checking the fuses (all of them).
