Radiator Help

I need a new radiator. I would like to get an aluminum one but they are a little pricey. What is the best radiator for the buck. Thanks

IMO

your right - the aluminum radiators (like "Be Cool") are excellent, but they are pricey - I've seen them as high as $650

but you can get replacement radiators from several places - I checked in the "Paddock" parts catalog, and for your '65- they show a 2 row for 155, a 3 row for 165 and a 4 row for 245 (if you have a 6 cylinder)

8 cylinders range from 140 - 180

Not promoting or disrespecting any one company over another, but I bet you could even find one a little cheaper (since in my experience, the PADDOCK is not always the cheapest ...)

and if it was my money were were spending, I'd go ahead and replace the hoses with some nice reinforced ones and maybe a new thermostat - since those are not that much more ...

I got a Northern radiator. It is a awsome radiator, my engine has 12.5/1 comp and it still keeps it nice and cool on 100 degree days. Look them up at www.northernfactroy.com . I am very impressed. I got mine off of ebay. Sorry i dont remember the prise, but i think it was around 300 with shipping. Dont quote me on that. LIke i said though, its a great radiator. I think mustangs plus sells them now, but they dont say the name of them. If you are anything like me, you would rather buy from the smaller companies because they are small, and usualy they have very good products, not to mention it gets there name out.

dude, get a summit racing rad. they are northern's but have the summit name on them. they go for $170 out of the summit mag.

thats what i wanna get but mines still good - i'm running a 90 fox body rad out of a 5.0, max cool!

It was only cheap in price. The rad was realy nice. Nice welds and cores.

....Unless that wasn't meant toward me.

I purchased a 3 row radiator made by Modine. I bought it at American Mustang in California . Their price was around 200.00 at the time (last year). Make sure you have a good fan shroud (mine was cracked) and a good fan placed with the blades half way inside the shroud for best cooling. My fan was almost 4 inches away and she overheated. Went crazy rebuilding heads and stuff, all along it was the damn fan sitting too far away from the radiator to be effective. Sorry for the ramble, just wanted to save you some headache.

Go with the northern. Dallas Mustang sells them. Straight swap and it works Waaaaayyyyy better than a stock or copper replacement.

I have a "summit brand." No shame here. They can't make all that stuff themselves. they buy it all cheap and slap on their name. The rad has Northern stamped on the side on mine. It's all welded. It kept my car at 160 in up 120 deg in the mojave desert when I was stations there without a fan shroud. They work great!!! Only problem is it's semi universal. So you have to make the brackets and use different hoses. But I was willing to put up with it rather than pay those inflated prices just for a name.

I am looking for a direct replacement. I dont want to have to do much fabricating. I also have a 289 and would like to put a 302 roller engine in. The radiator would still work on either combo correct?

All the classic parts vendors have drop-in replacements. I'd recommend you move up to a 3 core radiator and I strongly recommend an electric fan. You'll save some hp and get superior cooling.

It's pretty tough to beat the cooling efficiency of aluminum. The Northerns are available here to

You should use a good HP fan shroud as well.

If the Northerns are still too pricey, we have found the 3 row high flows as a good alternative even over standard 4 rows...

I use a Howe "generic" in my race rod with no problems. The custom fit are expensive but paid less than $200 for mine several years back.
