Rant: American Racing Shelby Razor

Been looking to get some rims, and have been reading a lot about offset. From what I've been reading (correct me if I'm wrong) 35mm-45mm is about the offset you want, 45mm being stock fitment.

So I'm looking at these American Racing Shelby Razor wheels, that are supposed to be 'designed' for the 2005+ mustang, yet they offer 12mm (5 1/2 backspacing) and 24mm (6 backspacing). From reading various forums, this isn't going to work. Wheels sitting passed the wheel well are not an option for me. So, why does American Racing say these are made for the 2005+ when they have what appears to be the old offsets? Is there something I'm missing?

ANY comments appreciated, as I'd rather not spend a bunch of money on making my new GT look like it's on rollerskates.

I totally agree with you, even the AR website has an 05 shelby with them on it. I really wanted those rims badly!! so i emailed AR about it and they said, "oh you are right, 05 mustang needs 35mm-45mm offset to work, uh, you could try our Rouge wheels they come in 35mm offset" how stupid is it to promote a wheel like that, and then not have it in the size to fit the car? dumbest ever.

Thanks for the reply, and the info on American Racing. I'm hip to it now, because I bought some rims designed 'specifically' for my '05 F-150 (back when I had it), and the offset turned out to be a disaster.

Live and learn, but now I know better.

Good find! I wish they had a picture with a closeup of the fender, but that would've been luck. That offset looks like it's pushing the roller skate look. The **** is wrong with American Racing.

I mean, this is a picture from that page that I took into photoshop and cut down a little, but it just looks like it's sticking out.

true...

While looking at it again, the set-up does look "borderline" at best. I see that you already have the Pro Kit on your car. I was all prepared to order a set for my '07. I think (thought) that those rims on an Alloy stang would look great. Now....I'm not so sure...Gee, Thanks!! LOL!!

Is there anyone out there whose an America Racing distributor? (not likely, but its worth asking).

I have the 18x9 Razor wheels on my 06 and they fit just fine.

Could be worse. You could have bought some Weld Evo Racing Wheels which they advertised for the 2005GT. You could have imported them into the UK and paid shipping, import duty and 17.5% VAT. Then you could have found they didn't fit. 7 months down the line you could still be waiting for the remedial spacers allowing you to fit the damn wheels.

That's right, you could be me.

I ordered them anyway...

Thanks retfr8flyr. I ordered a set of 20" X 9" Shelby Razors today. In Toronto (Ontario) it is illegal to drive a vehicle with tires/wheels "protruding" beyond the wheelwells. I am confident that the wheels will be OK.

I bought them from Summit Racing. I saved over $120.00 ($31.00 each) by getting Summit to "Price Match" the same wheels that are listed on www.wheelsforless.com!!!! I paid $198.99/wheel, as apposed to the $229.00 price that Summit lists on their website.

I agree. $198.99 is a deal! I'm pleased. It payed off to "google" the wheel name. I'd never heard of www.wheelsforless.com, but hey seeing their site allowed me to save at Summit.

even though you have all ready ordered them I thought I'd give you my experience with American Racing (shelby razor 18x9) and Summit Racing...

I was new to up grading rims and got conflicting stories because people mixed up offset and backspaceing so long story made short I ordered the wrong P/N: 198s-8965 (12mm offset) after getting them and seeing the "roller skate effect" I contacted American Racing and summit and comfirmed that I should have gotten P/N: 198s-8966 (24mm) and after more conversation found out that they are coming out with P/N: 198s-8967 wich will be 36mm these are said to be set for production sometime around the October time frame.

Well Summit's customer service was incredible and allowed me to exchange the rims with the only cost for me to incure being the cost of getting them broken down and built back up. Here's a link with a little more detail about it...

Just a note that might help you save some time. You will need to get thin walled conical lug nuts with a socket these are different from the stock acorn lug nuts.

I did order the "8966" wheels. I'm glad to hear that Summit gave you great service. Like I said earlier, just like you, I was able to find a deal and they price matched. The price for the "real" Shelby Razor's was less then the many "replica" wheels being sold on ebay (minus the $70.00 + dollar shipping fee!).

I believe that the 8966's will be OK.

BTW, how do the Razor's look?

I've had a lot of people make comment on how it makes it look more bold and aggressive. But most important I like it.

I have Steeda Ultra-Lite springs and Tokico D-Spec struts and dampers. I am very happy with this setup and recommend it highly.
