ratchet shifter w/lever

could someone tell me how to shift one of these with the lever.why do they call it a ratchet.i'm intersted in a 1990 lx 5.0 and it has one of these.i only saw the picture of it and had not seen the car.i drive a 5spd stick so i don't know anything about these ratchet shifters.what's the lever for,going into reverse or park? thanks!

yes, they're mostly NHRA approved so the lever is for the reverse, park lockout. You have to put the shifter in drive, then lift up on the handle to be able to engage reverse or park.
