I've noticed a "rattling" type noise during acceleration. I can hear it really well in a parking lot or area where there are objects that cause an echo. I don't hear it when idling. Any thoughts on what the heck it is? It's freakin' driving me nuts.
Thanks

Where is it coming from (front, rear, etc)?

Is it speed dependent?

Does it change depending on what gear you're in?

Could be anything from engine noise to bad catalytic converters or exhaust heat shields, etc. Need a lot more information on who, what, when, where, why and how.

It sounds like it's coming from the front, lower part of the car. Like an exhaust rattle. I don't have cats so it's not that.
I've got Hedman headers straight to an H-pipe and some Flowmasters.
It's only when I am acelerating though. I can't hear it at an idle.

Can you hear it if you just rev the engine up in neutral? If so, get someone to rev it up while you listen while lying underneath it. At a minimum you might be able to pinpoint the area the rattle is coming from.

I've had customers describe "pinging" the same way...detonation. Could be due to ignition timing, low octane fuel, carbon buildup on the pistons.

I would put it up in the air (all four wheels) and run it. Ideally have someone else in the car and they can run it up to speed while you listen carefully. Check your motor mounts, too.

Put your hand on the shifter and hold it down in whatever gear its in to see if its the shifter. My hurst rattles against the stop adjustments on it .

All excellent suggestions.
Just to clarify, it only makes the noise while under a load. Sitting in neutral reving the engine, I don't hear it.
I've been using 91 octane fuel and I've ran Lucas gas treatment the last 3 fillups.
I also tried holding the shifter, no dice there.
I'm going to go ahead and buy one of these tune up kits and see if it helps.

Certainly couldn't hurt.
Thanks guys

The tuneup kit is definitely a good idea but it's probably not gonna fix your issue. Check your timing.

Distributer kicked the bucket a couple of days ago. Replaced it and set timing. Still have "rattling" type noise.
Maybe exhaust leak?

Did it make the same noise a few days ago before the distributor was replaced?

What grade fuel? What's your timing set at?

I've got it set at the factory 10 degrees and running 91 octane.
I've ran some Lucas fuel treatment the last 3 fill ups too.
